Catching up with ... Michael Jackson

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/thetoydepartment/2011/09/catching_up_with_michael_jacks.html
mikejackson400.gifFifteen years ago, the Ravens’ Michael Jackson arrived in Baltimore wearing one gold earring and driving a Mercedes convertible stuffed with a wardrobe of 30 suits, each with matching shoes.

How his outfit has changed. Last month, as heavy rains pounded Louisiana, Jackson donned a rain slicker and rubber gloves and sloughed through a trough of stinking ooze to clear a clogged sewer line in the community of Tangipahoa.

That’s life for a small-town mayor.

“Football didn’t prepare me for this,” said Jackson, 42, who was elected in 2008. “The job is far tougher than playing in the NFL.” ...

Left lane road hogs are a safety hazard on the roads

This is a huge issue when driving on Route 140 in Carroll County. The folks that hog-up the left lane are either oblivious or self-important idiots.

If there is someone behind you – or better yet, if there is a long line of cars following you; and no one in front of you. Then you are a safety problem. Get out of the left lane.

Stay in the right lane unless you are going to pass or you are about to make a left-hand turn… If you do not understand this, then get off the road. You are danger to yourselves and everyone else on the road.

Left lane road hogs are a safety hazard on the roads…

Kevin Dayhoff The Tentacle: The Nine Capitals of the United States

September 28, 2011

A “Capital” History Lesson
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Yesterday, September 27, one city in the United States celebrated the anniversary of the occasion when it was the capital of the United States for one day. Can you name that city? How many cities have served as the capital of our nation since September 5, 1774?

For many well-read and knowledgeable political and history junkies, there is nothing more fun than historical trivia. Perhaps because little known gems from history give us a much needed respite from the heated discussions over contemporary politics.

It was Lancaster, PA...

September 24, 1945: Black Marketeers Sob, Dump Ill-Gotten Goods

Black Marketeers Sob, Dump Ill-Gotten Goods

Scrambling Desperately To Get Rid Of Nylons, Shoes, Piece Goods And Silks

Democratic Advocate, September 24, 1945

After four flourishing years, the bottom finally has dropped out of the black markets with a refreshing thud. And war-fattened marketeers are scrambling desperately to get rid of their once precious stockpiles of nylons, shoes, piece goods and silks at deflated prices.

They took an enormous loss when gas rationing was called off. Nylon hose, prime specialty of the wartime black market, has slumped almost overnight from $15 to $5 a pair along Broadway and Park Ave., where the traffic has been particularly heavy.

The spectacular decline extends to such other black market staples as meat, used cars and rubber goods. You can even get a little Scotch whisky if you know the dealer. War-short canned goods, such as imported sardines and selected salmon and tuna fish are finding their way back to retailers' shelves—and meat is once more hanging publicly from butchers' hooks.

End of gas rationing caused a panic in the black market. It was the same in other black market fields, supply overtaking demand for the first time since Pearl Harbor. Consumers sat back to wait for promised postwar commodity—of better grade, price and style

Sweet memories still remain from Shaffer & Co. Variety Store

It was 50 years ago when the Shaffer & Co. Variety Store, a Westminster institution close to the hearts of many children in town, closed.

After our recent columns in The Eagle regarding the Westminster Post Office building at the corner of Main Street and Longwell Avenue, a number of readers have been in touch with questions.

Several asked about the two buildings that once stood to the east of the post office in what is now a parking lot.

It was fifty years ago when the Shaffer & Co. Variety Store, a Westminster institution close to the hearts of many children in town, closed.

After the recent two-part series ran in the Eagle Archives on the Westminster Post Office building, at the corner of Main Street and Longwell Avenue, a number of readers were in touch with many questions.

Several asked about the two building that once stood to the east of the post office in what is now a parking lot.

A January 13, 1966 newspaper clipping provided by local historian George Welty, tells part of the story. “… the Stonesifer building (was) being demolished last week to make way for Post Office enlargement...”

A second picture was identified: “These two buildings located on East Main Street next to the Post Office were completely demolished last week… The store … located in the corner building will long be remembered as Schaffer’s store. Jessie Myers having done business there for many years.”

Post Office took shape through rain, sleet, bankruptcy, deaths
Eagle Archives

Kevin Dayhoff, September 3, 2011 | 6:44 p.m.

Last week we discussed the incarnations of the Westminster Post Office — but there are more stories to tell. In 1934, folks began to wonder if the "new" post office at the corner of Longwell Avenue and East Main Street would ever be finished.

Of course, the present post office is on Woodward Road, but here's the story of that classic 1934 office (now home to Kohn Publishing) in the downtown area:

"The old story that 'good things come to those who wait' is true, for travel where you will, a finer and more beautiful post office building will not be found…," according to an old newspaper clipping from Aug. 24, 1934.

The two buildings in this photograph, the Stonesifer building and the Shaffer & Co. Variety Store, were torn down in the first week of January 1966 to make way for the expansion of the parking lot for the 1934 post office building at the corner of East Main Street and Longwell Avenue. Harry W. and Arline Myers Shaffer founded the business in 1911 as a general merchandise store. Arline’s brother Jesse later joined the business after WWI. When Mr. Shaffer died in 1941, his widow Arline and their daughter continued in the business along with Jesse Myers – who was later helped by his son, Howard Myers. The store closed in January 1961. Original photo by Kevin E. Dayhoff published by the Democratic Advocate Jan. 13, 1966.
