Eagle Archive: Reflecting on Easter with grace and peace

Eagle Archive: Reflecting on Easter with grace and peace

Happy Easter. Grace and peace to you.

In Carroll County, the celebration of Easter has always had an emphasis on the religious aspects of the holiday. However, childhood thoughts of Easter in Carroll are also filled of memories of community Easter egg hunts and other community activities.

Some 65 years ago, the Venture Club of Westminster sponsored the annual hunt on Easter Sunday on the Westminster Playground. An article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate on March 26, 1948, offers an example of how various aspects of the community got into the Easter spirit: There was a concert by the Westminster Municipal Band; an invocation by Father William T. McCrory, assistant pastor of St. John Catholic Church; and City Councilman J. Albert Mitten served as master of ceremonies.

[…]

Another childhood memory is that all the church services and activities during Holy Week and Easter were observed with strict pomp and ceremony — as dictated by the ecclesiastical liturgists in the congregation.

I learned at a very young age that the difference between a terrorist and liturgist is you can negotiate with a terrorist. For those unaware of ways of the church, a liturgist is sort of like a "parliamentarian" — with an edge… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0324-20130327,0,6902860.story

In an era when communities are increasingly turning to higher taxes and bigger government to provide quality of life services in a community; Carroll County still turns to the large number of volunteers and philanthropic groups in our community — which are supported by donations of time, talent and money, and not tax dollars.

The Rotary is among the stalwart examples of this attitude in Carroll. Club secretary Dr. Jim Lightner notes that at this month's Rotary event, Ober Herr, one the longest-serving members of the club, gave a brief presentation details the organization's rich history… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/neighborhoods/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0324-20130320,0,3842909.story

I donated blood today at the blood drive at Grace Lutheran Church

Overnight, Carroll County had a relatively rare late March snow...

By mid-afternoon on Monday the streets in Westminster had had been cleared for hours and traffic seemed to be moving easily.

Earlier in the day I had interviewed the Westminster Street Superintendent Larry Bloom and Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding and both had said that there were little, if no traffic problems in Westminster as a result of the snow… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/bal-early-spring-snow-carroll-20130325,0,2188928.story

So after lunch I went over to Grace Lutheran Church and donated blood at our church’s regularly scheduled blood drives.

Eagle Archive: There is no predicting the weather in March By Kevin E. Dayhoff, March 10, 2013 http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0310-20130306,0,2962803.story

Hopefully the snowfall earlier in the week is this winter’s last gasp. We always seem so surprised when it snows in March, however, throughout Carroll County history some of our most significant winter storms have occurred during March.

The weather in the month of March in Carroll County is just plain unpredictable at its best; although the troubled month may be best described by the diagnosis of multiple personality disorder.

Among the biggest ‘spring blizzards’ in Carroll County history; on March 29-30, 1942 it snowed 22.0 inches and on March 15-18, 1892, it snowed 16.0 inches.

Other notable March snowfalls include the Ash Wednesday storm of March 6-8, 1962 when around 10 inches of snow fell at Friendship Airport, now known as BWI.

Many can still remember the storm that hit the area on March 12-14, 1993 when 12 inches of snow fell in the Carroll County area.

In March of 1902, the county was still reeling from the mess caused by the winter storm of Feb. 21, 1902, when Carroll County experienced one of the worst ice storms to ever hit the area. The now out-of-print American Sentinel newspaper hailed it as “The Great Sleet Storm,” according to research by local historian – and MD State Senator, Joe Getty… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0310-20130306,0,2962803.story

Kevin Dayhoff Eagle Archive Mike Eaton inspired a love of Carroll living

In a 2009 edition of the Historical Society of Carroll County publication, Carroll Courier, there is a picture dated March 1, 1950, of 5-year old Sally Adams with her cocker spaniel, Ricky, in front of Hoffman's Inn, 216 E. Main St., Westminster.

The photo accompanied a first-hand personal account of life on East Main Street and at Hoffman's Inn, from 1945 to 1961. The property is now known as Historical Society's gift shop, the Shop at Cockey's.

Early history of the property, which dates back to the 1820s, is complicated and reads like a Victorian soap opera. Nevertheless, it's where a great deal of the planning and creation of Carroll County took place. After the county was formed, Cockey's served for many years as part of the seat of county government.

"In 1922 Frank and Mary Hoffman bought the building and it became Hoffman's Inn and Boarding House. It was inherited by their daughter and operated by Thelma Hoffman until 1969."

William Granville "Mike" Eaton lived on the third floor of Hoffman's Inn for many years. Eaton came to Westminster in 1926 to attend then-Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, where he graduated in 1930. It was in that year that he began his teaching career at Elmer A. Wolfe High School in Union Bridge… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/neighborhoods/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0317-20130313,0,5153633.story

Westminster Police Investigate Fatal Shooting

On March 16, 2012 at approximately 11:45 a.m. police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to a residence in the 400 block of South Hills Court in Westminster for the report of a shooting.

Upon arrival they found a male on the first floor of the home suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim was alert and conscious at the time. He was transported by EMS staff to the University Of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he died during surgery.

The victim has been identified as Vygants Tomas Campe (46 years of age) of Hanover, MD.

Investigators have determined that the victim was visiting with the owner of the residence at the time of the shooting.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the home owner was handling a pistol on the second floor of the home when it discharged. It appears that the projectile passed through the floor and struck the victim who was lying on the couch in the living room.

No charges have been placed at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are conferring with representatives of the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office.
