Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

Baltimore football and Westminster have a long history together

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the team will not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com, Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football and Westminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949, "College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year."

The article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate continued, "Dr. Lowell S. Ensor, president of the Methodist school, and Walter S. Driskill, Colts general manager, have signed a contract providing for the city's All-America Football Conference squad to use the Westminster College's campus as a pre-season base of operations, it was announced…"

The history of football in Baltimore — and Westminster — can trace one of its lineages to the All-America Football Conference in 1946 and another lineage to the NFL in 1944.

The first football team in Baltimore began on Dec. 28, 1946, when the bankrupt Miami Seahawks franchise, of the All-American Football Conference, was awarded to Baltimore.

Just over two-years later, according to the 1949 newspaper article, Coach Cecil Isbell said he expected to take a Colt squad to Westminster, "We plan to begin practice about five weeks before our opening contest..." The decision last week by the Baltimore Ravens to move their summer training camp from Westminster's McDaniel College to the team facility in Owings Mills came down to hearts and minds.

To thousands of football fans in the Baltimore area whose hearts belong to the football team, the Ravens were presented with an easy choice.

Since coming to Baltimore from Cleveland in 1996, the Ravens conducted training camp at McDaniel every summer until this past one, when the club remained at its Owings Mills base due to a late resolution to the lockout. It seemed logical that the Ravens would return in 2012, because you don't break with tradition.

But tradition isn't what it used to be, especially in sports, and the world is light-years removed from 1996.

The Ravens' brass used their heads when finalizing last week's decision to move training camp to their spacious and comfortable Owings Mills complex. Sad as it may be to Carroll and Westminster, the decision makes sense on many levels...

I was fortunate enough to pull this screen grab off the Carroll County Times web site minutes after the Times’ staff discovered it and minutes before they pulled it.

Off course I have never-ever made a mistake in my copy. Well, maybe not. My favorite was the time I wrote Paul of Taurus – err, um, instead of Paul of Tarsus…

Anyway, it seems that right after the Times’ staff discovered it, they decided to have some fun with it just before they pulled it.

Too funny. I happen to like folks who can roll with it. For those who are not aware, the Carroll County Times has one of the best sports departments and sports reporters in the Mid-Atlantic region… Bookmark and check it out: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/sports/

However, as good as its sports reporters are; I am not under the impression that they can see into the future. Or maybe they can?

Of course, they could always use a few more semi-colons…

The Carroll County Times does a really good job of posting news updates on their site frequently during the day. It is really smart web management on their part.

I’d love to know the rest of the story as to the news feed with the incorrect headline…

Apparently, it was also linked to a news story with the incorrect headline also. But I wasn’t quick enough to grab it.

Meanwhile we certainly hope they kept the headline copy available for next week’s Jets versus the Colts game. I sure do not want the Colts to win and would love to see the Jets do it again; as they did when they beat the Colts 29-15 on Sunday, December 27, 2009…

If you will recall, that was the game when the headline from an AP article said it all, “Caldwell pulls starters in third with 5-point lead; Jets rally for win.” http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=291227011; when “The first-year coach (Jim Caldwell) pulled Manning & Co. with a 15-10 lead and 5:36 left in the third quarter.”

The upset spoiled the chances of the Colts from having a perfect season, and ended “the Colts' pursuit of perfection and their NFL-record 23-game winning streak with a 29-15 victory that had fans serenading Lucas Oil Stadium with boos and Manning, the three-time MVP, offering support for his coach's decision.”

The “Fast Facts” in the article explained:

“Peyton Manning was removed from the lineup in the third quarter with the Colts up 15-10. The Jets then scored 19 unanswered points to snap the Colts' 23-game regular season win streak.

“The Colts had fewer than 100 rushing yards for the fourth straight game; they have failed to reach the mark in 12 of 15 games this season.

“Peyton Manning (14 for 21, 192 yards) became the fourth player in NFL history with 50,000 passing yards for his career.”

Whatever. We should have been so lucky as to have had such a disappointment here in Baltimore with the Ravens.

Where is Matt Stover when we need him

Why is it that the Ravens no longer have Matt Stover kicking for them?

I mean seriously; I do not know the answer. Can someone explain to me why he is no longer with the Ravens?

This afternoon’s Ravens game was a real downer.

I mean, I am not a big sports fan. The sports fan in my family is my wife. My exposure with watching sports is usually watching my wife watch sports – which is highly entertaining. My usually calm and controlled mathematician and economist wife gets fairly excited and I find it, well, amusing.

That said, I want the Ravens to do well. I kinda think that it is good for the community for the Ravens to do well.

However, I have never had it explained to me why Matt Stover is not longer playing for the Ravens. Even a non-sports fan like me can tell that his talents is sorely missed. Who can fill me in?
