Artist Biography

After working in the corporate world for many years Donna took an early retirement.  In January 2007, she took her first art class at Carroll Community College.  She continued with private watercolor classes with Felisa Flecker, workshops and classes with Tara Grim, Carolyn Seabolt, Sarah Abel DeLuca, and Skip Lawrence.  Presently Donna enjoys abstract painting, using acrylics, collage and mixed media with Ed Ramsburg, who continually encourages her to grow as an artist.

She has exhibited at Carroll County Community College – The Great Hall, Carroll Life Gallery, Circuit Court Building, Carroll County Arts Council, Frederick Arts Council (FAC), Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center (DVAEC), The Artists Gallery, FMH Crestwood Gallery, and Frederick County Art Association.  Within this past year, two of the art pieces have been shown at the Annapolis Statehouse Building.  Presently, original pieces and giclees are in private collections and consigned in a local shop.

When Donna was in the second grade art class, she remembered feeling the excitement when painting her first abstract.  Now she is focusing on acrylic, collage and mixed media abstracts - the larger the canvas, the better.  She enjoys expressing creativity through painting and going to new levels using the imagination with whatever materials are available.  The whole process from beginning to end is exhilarating! I love sharing my world of color with others.

When is a picture too much?

One of the last moments of Ki Suk Han’s life was broadcast to the world on the cover of Tuesday’s New York Post.
The 58-year-old Queens man was pushed in front of an oncoming Q train in New York City’s subway system on Monday. On the cover, Han is shown clinging to the subway platform seconds before being pinned between it and the cars, according to the Post’s description of events. He later died of his injuries.

The front page caught the attention of several journalists, whose Twitter reactions and judgments were nicely curated by Poynter’s Jeff Sonderman... http://blogs.spjnetwork.org/ethics/2012/12/04/when-is-a-picture-too-much/

An air of objectivity

By Kevin Smith
A lot has been made of the word “objectivity” as it relates to news coverage and reporting.
Some people believe it is an attainable value in American journalism, a principle worthy of our efforts. Others think it is nothing short of a myth. The rankling over whether objectivity can truly exist in journalism has been the subject of so much contention over the years, I feel like I can stand before a mirror and carry on a lengthy debate with myself.
I know the rhetoric.
I also know what I believe and how I apply it to my role as chairman of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Ethics Committee.
To the many voices who respectfully say it’s a farce, and to the growing voices who contend it’s nothing more than a concocted standard by which journalists could hang their principled crowns for display for all these many years, I concede this point – we are all biased... http://blogs.spjnetwork.org/ethics/2012/11/15/an-air-of-objectivity/

The Happy Lutherans celebrate Monday FEBRUARY 18, 2013 to commemorate the death of Martin Luther

The Happy Lutherans celebrate Monday FEBRUARY 18, 2013 to commemorate the death of Martin Luther

A big Hat Tip goes out to Bill Babylon for calling to our attention that:

Monday, February 18, 2013 is not only a United States national holiday, but also an international holiday…

467 years after Martin Luther’s death a national holiday has been proclaimed to remember the great reformer.

All Federal and State offices are closed, as well as banks and schools (check your newspapers for other closures).

Some appropriate ways to mark the occasion are:
Wear red (chartreuse doesn't count)
Nail something to a door.
Stand somewhere and refuse to budge.
Do something paradoxical.
Translate something into German.
Set your ring tone to "Ein Feste Burg"
All Lutherans may have this day as a personal holiday (check with your employer).

(Note: It also seems to be President's Day. Apparently, the best way to observe that is to buy something- perhaps even a President!)

This message brought to you by the Happy Lutherans

The first Sunday in Lent at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church in Long Boat Key

The first Sunday in Lent at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church in Long Boat Key

Sunday, February 17, 2013

After a quick breakfast, we walked to church.

We attended church at the 10 a.m. services at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church - http://www.allangelslbk.org/ 563 Bay Isles Rd. | Longboat Key,  FL 34228-3142 (941) 383-8161

In all of my travels, this has to be one of the most welcoming and friendliest churches I have visited in many years.

An idea for later in the week: The Sandpipers - Men's Fellowship Meeting Tue - Feb 19, 2013 11:30 am - 1:30 pm All Angels Men's Fellowship Group , The Sandpipers, meets Tuesday, February 19 at 11:30 a.m. for a time of fellowship, followed by lunch, and a lecture on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during WWII. Call the church office, 941-383-8161, to register.
