A little while ago, just before the holidays I was mailed my copy of the magazine ‘Creative Expressions’ from Carroll Lutheran Village. I set my copy on the corner of my desk to look at later… Well, I finally got a chance to uncover it. It is wonderful to leaf through the magazine with art from the residents at Carroll Lutheran Village. It just seems like yesterday that we did the judging – but it was a number of months ago, that I was among the three local artists that met on Aug. 2, 2018 to select the artwork at Carroll Lutheran Village

On Sunday, September 2, 2018, [Update: 30Dec2018,] the Carroll County Times ran a copy of the picture we took that day in the section called, “Prime,” news for the 55-forward community. Page C3 Sunday, September 2, 2018. [Update: 30Dec2018] Creative Expressions - Three local artists met on Aug. 2 to select the artwork to appear on the covers of Creative Expressions, the annual Carroll Lutheran Village creative magazine produced by residents [that was just recently released.] The artwork was created by Village residents and staff for the 2018 issue of Creative Expressions.

Caroline and I are taking a recertification class for CPR, AED, and first aid along with the instructors and volunteers with the 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program of Carroll County; in the training room at the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1.

As a group, we have been taking this class together for about 20-years. We have 15 in the class. Westminster Fire Company firefighter and EMS provider Ed Burrell is the instructor. 

This is the first time we have taken the class at the fire company. The Westminster fire company has recently begun an initiative to provide various emergency response classes. Having a working EMS provider is a great advantage because the instructor can provide real-life experience insights for the class. February 18, 2019 Monday.

Yesterday, 17feb2019, we attended the 7:45 a.m. service at Grace Lutheran Church so that we could also go to the breakfast at the Reese fire hall. We really enjoyed the breakfast and saw lots of neat people, including Commissioner Dick Weaver and his wife, Lila.

Madeline E. Martin, 97, of Westminster

Madeline E. Martin, 97, of Westminster, died Thursday, February 7, 2019, at the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford, PA. Born on October 2, 1921, in Silver Run, she was the daughter of the late W. Wallace Eckert and Grace Haines Eckert.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Russell D. Martin who died on October 14, 2000.

Madeline graduated from Westminster High School. Before retiring she was a Secretary at Union National Bank.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #94, the Ladies Auxiliary at Carroll Hospital where she volunteered at the gift shop and also at the Brethren Home at Cross Keys.

She is survived by 4 children Robert A. Martin and wife Janet of New Oxford, PA., Joseph B. Martin of Richmond, VA., Patrick A. Martin and Christine Ferraro of Westminster, and Amy S. Martin and husband Scott of Hampstead; daughters-in-law Arlene Topaz Martin and Gail Shaffer Martin.

She is also survived by:

9 grandchildren Scott R. Martin, Michele E. Smith (Donnie), David A. Martin (Allison), Jason A. Martin (Amy), Russell G. Martin (Kathy), R. Daniel Martin (Jennifer), Andrew S. Martin, Noah E. Martin and Julia T. Martin (Ben Plache), 17 great-grandchildren, and extended family Paul and Mary Offutt of Missouri, and David and Penny Warner of Manchester.

She was predeceased by her siblings Leroy Eckert, Virginia Eckert Forsythe, Vera Eckert Hoch, and a granddaughter Lauren A. Martin.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Rebecca “Becky” Gale Powel, 81, of Union Bridge, Maryland

Rebecca “Becky” Gale Powel, 81, of Union Bridge, Maryland, passed away on Tues., Feb. 12, 2019.

Born May 16, 1937 in Chestertown and raised in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Virginia Wood Gale and Thomas W. Gale. She was the wife of William R. Powel, the love of her life for 59 years.

Becky was a 1955 graduate of Samuel Ready School of Baltimore and 1958 graduate of Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. During her 44 year career as a nurse, she worked at Union Memorial, St. Agnes, Kernan, and Carroll Hospitals.

At the end of her career, she owned her own medical and rehabilitation services business.

She passionately advocated for the needs of her patients and clients. Becky was a member of the board of the Samuel Ready Scholarships and was passionate about providing educational opportunities to girls of great financial need in Baltimore.

She was an active member of Pipe Creek Friends Meeting (Quakers) in Union Bridge. Becky was well known for her big heart, gregarious personality, and her unconditional love for her family and friends. She lived life to the fullest with joy and humor. She also liked to share her wisdom through her famous sayings, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving in addition to her husband are children, Virginia A. Powel, Thomas W. Powel (Kirstin), Anne Powel Davis (Lena Garrison), and Nancy R. Powel; grandchildren, Scott Davis (Sergio Sanguin), Sarah Davis, Elizabeth Davis, Benjamin Powel (Sara), Matthew Powel, Lilly Bay, and Laurel Bay; great-grandson, Linus William Powel; step-sisters, Jane Helweick (Henry), and Patricia Richardson.

Becky donated her body to the MD State Anatomy Board for research and the education of medical students. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

Hickory Hollow Farm in Finksburg is the latest Carroll County farm to be featured on Maryland Public Television’s television show “Maryland Farm & Harvest.”

The farm is featured on the final episode of the series’ sixth season, about locally produced spirits, which will be airing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The segment featuring Hickory Hollow will delve into a Baltimore distiller’s commitment to producing traditional Maryland rye whiskey from local ingredients.

Former Carroll County Commissioner John B. Joy, 85, of Taneytown

John "Dick" Joy, Jr. MARCH 17, 1933 ~ FEBRUARY 8, 2019 (AGE 85)

John B. “Dick” Joy, Jr., 85, of Taneytown died on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Gettysburg Hospital. Born March 17, 1933 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late John B. Joy, Sr. and the late Ella Louise (Kiefer) Joy. He was the devoted husband of Janet (Rodkey) Joy, to whom he was married for 64 years.

John was a graduate of New Windsor High School, class of ’51 and earned a B.A. degree in Economics from Western Maryland College in 1959.  He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown.  He served as Carroll County Commissioner from 1974-1978, was a member of the Carroll County Farm Museum Board for several years, and was a life-member of the Westminster Elks Lodge. John enjoyed cooking, gardening, and watching western movies. He was a fan of the former Baltimore Colts and had met many of the Colts players over the years.

Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife Janet, are his 5 children, John B. Joy III and wife Renee of Atlanta, GA, James T. Joy and wife Tawny of Shippensburg, PA, Susan J. Bowersox and husband Roy of Westminster, Alan B. Joy and wife Lynn of Littlestown, PA, and Robert P. Joy and wife Joyce of Sykesville;

Brothers-in-law, Fern Rodkey of Taneytown and Terry Smith and wife Janet of Hanover, PA; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by brother, Thomas F. Joy, sister, Betty J. Bowman, and sister-in-law, Doris J. Rodkey.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD with Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12th at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD 21787.

Former Carroll County Commissioner John B. Joy, 85, of Taneytown

John "Dick" Joy, Jr. MARCH 17, 1933 ~ FEBRUARY 8, 2019 (AGE 85)

John B. “Dick” Joy, Jr., 85, of Taneytown died on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Gettysburg Hospital. Born March 17, 1933 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late John B. Joy, Sr. and the late Ella Louise (Kiefer) Joy. He was the devoted husband of Janet (Rodkey) Joy, to whom he was married for 64 years.

John was a graduate of New Windsor High School, class of ’51 and earned a B.A. degree in Economics from Western Maryland College in 1959.  He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown.  He served as Carroll County Commissioner from 1974-1978, was a member of the Carroll County Farm Museum Board for several years, and was a life-member of the Westminster Elks Lodge. John enjoyed cooking, gardening, and watching western movies. He was a fan of the former Baltimore Colts and had met many of the Colts players over the years.

Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife Janet, are his 5 children, John B. Joy III and wife Renee of Atlanta, GA, James T. Joy and wife Tawny of Shippensburg, PA, Susan J. Bowersox and husband Roy of Westminster, Alan B. Joy and wife Lynn of Littlestown, PA, and Robert P. Joy and wife Joyce of Sykesville;
