Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

July 4th, 2018.

Just to shake things up a bit, Caroline, Grammy, and I had Popeyes carry-out for dinner on the 4th of July. The place was very busy. Staff was very nice. We enjoyed our dinner. We will go back. There are several things I want to try on the menu. Caroline and I enjoy southern cooking – especially Louisiana – Cajun cooking.

I cannot remember the last time I went to Popeyes. Years ago, when I was in office, then-Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker used to have our executive strategy sessions at Popeyes 3694 in Westminster at the intersection of Rte 140 and Rte 97 – 624 Baltimore Blvd. 410-857-7550.

Although Popeyes has occupied the building for a long time, many years ago, it was the location of a savings and loan called Vermont Federal. Before then it was a service and gas station. I do not recall the name of the gas station.

The other night, Caroline and I were visiting with  friends Charles L Dorm Jr and Emily Willis-Dorm and he was reminiscing that there was a fire there a number of years ago that has to be one of the coldest fires the Westminster Fire Company ever fought. Along with the fire at the Shipley House at the corner of Main and Center Street. Caroline’s Dad always told stories about the fire at Hahn’s Grocery Store at the corner of Bishop Street and East Main Street. Apparently that was a cold fire also. I also think that former Westminster Police Chief Dean Brewer also recalls the fire at the location of Vermont Federal.

Happy 4th

The Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times killed 21 people

The Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times killed 21 people

In its recent newsletter, the Society of Professional Journalists has taken the opportunity to remind us about the Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times building.

The 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times has been the subject of books and film. By CAROLINA A. MIRANDA SEP 22, 2017 http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/miranda/la-et-cam-esotouric-los-angeles-times-bombing-20170922-story.html

The weapon: 16 sticks of dynamite and a windup alarm clock.

The target: The old Los Angeles Times building, an 1886 brick-and-granite edifice known as "the fortress," on Broadway and First Street, across the street from where The Times is located today.

The bomber: J.B. McNamara, who was linked to an ironworkers union that ordered the attack — part of a radical bombing campaign to go after anti-union strongholds in the early days of the 20th century.

Twenty-one people died in the early hours of Oct. 1, 1910, when the explosive device ripped an entire wing off The Times building. A night editor and a telegraph operator were among the dead, and dozens of others were wounded and maimed. A report published in The Times two days after the incident described the scene as an "awful pit of death."

Heralded as the "crime of the century," the bombing has been the subject of books (such as "Deadly Times" by Lew Irwin) and it has figured in documentaries (Peter Jones' "Inventing L.A.: The Chandlers and Their Times").

A Massachusetts woman begs people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs

A Massachusetts woman begs people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs

KED - What the article does not mention is that in part, one of the drivers for the precipitous increase in the cost of a ride to the emergency room is “ambulance abuse.” Folks who call an ambulance for unnecessary reasons. These are the folks who have a headache, a running nose or stub their toe and they are calling an ambulance. At the station we call them the “frequent fliers.” More often than not – “frequent fliers” do not pay their ambulance bills – read: the station goes uncompensated for the call; and these folks call a lot. So, who pays for ambulance abuse – we do. All of us do.

Woman begging people not to call ambulance gains national attention
BY ARIS FOLLEY - 07/03/18 03:20 PM EDT

A Massachusetts woman is drawing attention for begging people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs after she was injured in a subway accident.

Video of the woman from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police (MBTA) Police Department went viral over the weekend. It shows her in apparent agony after her leg was caught in a gap between a train and the platform on Friday.

The 45-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, asked fellow passengers who came to her aid to not call the ambulance. “Do you know how much an ambulance costs?” the injured woman asked one passenger.
The story first picked up traction on Twitter when a Boston Globe reporter posted about the incident after witnessing the aftermath of the accident on Friday.

June 26th, 2018 Voting today in Westminster, Md.

June 26th, 2018 Voting today in Westminster, Md.

By Kevin Dayhoff

Update: June 26, 2018 Primary election results:

2:45 p.m. Tuesday 26Je2018 - I just got back from the Westminster Elementary School polling place. The turnout has been light – but that polling place is usually really busy in the evening when folks are coming home from work…. We were in and out quickly. Well, after saying hi to my neighbors and friends. There is a time-honored tradition that voting in Westminster is a community get together.

I interacted with all the campaign workers – whether I support their particular candidate or not. I had no negative experiences. Which I guess is good. I always have my cell phone camera and reporter’s notebook at the ready – but everyone was friendly and polite – and I applaud all of them for participating.

I am always impressed with the election judges. They were very friendly, professional, capable, and competent. It is a long day and I thank them for their service. (I was a chief judge for 10-years – a long time ago, in the 1990s.)

Voting gives me goosebumps. We cannot take our right to vote for granted. I served in the Marines and have had good friends die defending that right. And I worked in the civil rights movement in the early 1970s. We simply cannot take our right to vote for granted.

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” ~ John Q. Adams.

If you are not standing up for something, sit down.

A big thank you for the sponsors of this year’s Corbit’s Charge events.

155th Anniversary of Corbit’s Charge Civil War Encampment

I attended as many of the events todays as possible. The first commemoration was mentioned today several times. I have fond memories of the first event. And I miss Tom LeGore, one of the great historians of Corbit’s Charge, Civil War, Westminster, and Carroll County history. Mr. LeGore passed away last year. His passing left many of us sad.

Brief Summary of the Event, according to the Pipe Creek Civil War Round Table website: https://pipecreekcivilwarroundtable.weebly.com/corbits-charge-encampment.html June 23, 2018

Each year during the last weekend in June, the Pipe Creek Civil War Round Table (PCCWRT) and other historical groups commemorate the tragedy of war that took place on Westminster’s streets and within surrounding Carroll County, MD. The annual event exhibits a great experience for visitors of all ages by providing children’s activities, concerts, military demonstrations, vignette skits, skirmishes between the armies, and presentations by living historians. Traditional artisans, such as blacksmiths and tinsmiths, will be present at the event. There are also guided tours of Westminster detailing the historic landmarks of the city and battle. Authors, local historic societies, and historic artifacts will be featured inside the Emerald Hill house.

The paramount activity will be a memorial service on Saturday June 23rd located at the Corbit’s Charge Monument at 200 Willis St. which recognizes the sacrifice of the Civil War era civilians of Westminster as well as the soldiers of both the Union and Confederate Armies. This memorial service concludes at the graveyard of Westminster’s Ascension Episcopal Church located at 23 N. Court St. with the laying of two wreaths on the graves of 2 Civil War Veterans: 1st Lt. John Murray, Co. E 4th Virginia Cavalry (Confederate, killed during Corbit’s Charge) and Samuel Butler Co. C 32nd Inf. U.S.C.T. (Union)

So, please join the Pipe Creek Civil War Roundtable and fellow historical groups in attendance at the 155th Anniversary Corbit's Charge Encampment to honor and commemorate the Civil War history in Carroll County, MD.
