Eagle Archive: School experience has changed in Carroll, but it still adds up for students

Eagle Archive: School experience has changed in Carroll, but it still adds up for students

In August, 1971, much of the community was curious as to whether or not the "Carroll County Vocational Technical Center" would open its doors on Sept. 7 to launch its first year of operation.

Today, the school on Washington Road, next to Westminster High School, is known as the Carroll County Career and Technology Center.

The job training and college preparatory classes at the Career and Technology Center vary from business and retail to computer and construction, from engineering and manufacturing to health and transportation.

According to an Aug. 16, 1971, article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate newspaper, "Frank Mather, administrator of the center, said that all of the school's facilities except for the horticulture area, conference rooms and some lavatories and some equipment will be ready for use on opening day….. http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0819-20120818,0,5980768.story

Eagle Archive: If the past is a guide, political conventions are sure to be entertaining

As the Olympics draw to a close and the end of the summer looms on the horizon, you can be sure that the upcoming Republican and Democrat national conventions will provide end-of-summer entertainment.

For those setting their DVRs: The Republican National Convention is in Tampa on Aug. 27-30 and the upcoming Democrat National Convention will take place in Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 3-6.

Today's presidential nomination process is very different from the early days of the Republic, when the two major parties — the Federalists and the Democrat-Republicans (the forerunner of the today's Democrat Party) — determined their respective presidential nominees by a caucus made-up of members of Congress or state legislatures. This process prevailed through 1828.

The first national political convention of what we now know as the two major political parties was held by the Democrat Party just down the road in Baltimore, May 21 and 23, 1832… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0812-20120808,0,1262168.story

Thursday, August 2, 2012

http://www.westminstervfd.org/news/fullstory/newsid/168241

Tonight's Duty Crew was dedicated to Ryan Payne. Ryan joined the department as a junior member while still in middle school. After high school Ryan joined the United States Marine Corp and served as a tank commander.

After serving our nation for four years, Ryan returned to Westminster and rejoined the company. In a week Ryan along with his wife and son will be moving to South Carolina where he will be attending college.

The Westminster Fire Department is sorry to see such an extraordinary member leave, but wish him and his family the best. Tonight was Ryan's last night with the Thursday Night Duty Crew. ... http://www.westminstervfd.org/news/fullstory/newsid/168241

Eagle Archive: In 1923, sheriff busted the Hampstead fireman's carnival for gambling

On Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1923, the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company carnival was accused of running a gambling operation and was shut down by Carroll County Sheriff William Phillips.

Phillips appeared on the carnival grounds with Carroll County State's Attorney Theodore F. Brown, and arrested the person in charge of the carnival's amusements, Thomas Zepp, and hauled him off to jail.

Pandemonium broke loose in Hampstead as a result. This was especially true because of the significance the Hampstead fireman's carnival has played in the history of the town…

1994 Westminster Nurseries recipes and home hints Calendar

For over 25-years I made a living farming nursery stock, trees, ornamental plants, and perennials. One of my key and critical suppliers was Westminster Nurseries.

I grew-up almost next to the Westminster Nurseries production fields and green houses and spent many an entire day roaming Westminster Nurseries’ fields.

And actually, that is how I learned the Latin names of most plants. The plants in the fields were always identified by its Latin name and as a child I never really thought much of it. I just figured that was the plant’s name… It was not until later in high school, when I took Latin classes, that I learned more about the Rules of Linnaeus and taxonomy…

I always liked the Westminster Nurseries’ calendar; not only because I liked the pictures, but I also liked the recipes and home hints…
