Councilmember Kevin Dayhoff Arts Council report for the June 10, 2019 Westminster mayor and Council meeting:

There are quite a number of other events coming to the Arts Council.

For the sake of time, I will just mention two events here. For more information go to: www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org

I was not able to attend the annual Art in the Park festival held on the grounds of Westminster City Hall. In 1993 I exhibited at the first Art in the Park and have exhibited a number of times in the past, but this year I volunteered to help with the horses at the annual Equestrian Special Olympics.

By all reports, this year’s Art in the park went well – and was well-attended. This year, according to a May 29, 2019 article by Cat Righter in the Carroll County Times - Susan Williamson, the visual arts coordinator with the Carroll County Arts Council, said that about 58 artists participated. “The Art of the Musical Instrument” June 20 through August 9, 2019

Some of the highlights include: “The Art of the Musical Instrument” Exhibit at the Carroll Arts Center

The Carroll Arts Center is proud to be hosting a new exhibit in the Tevis Gallery from June 20 through August 9, 2019. The “The Art of the Musical Instrument” weaves together sound, narrative, history, and actual musical instruments. Guest curator Ryan A. Koons, PhD, focuses on musical instruments as crafted art objects with diverse histories as well as objects that create beautiful sounds.

This exhibit coincides with a performance by Wherligig, the Carroll-based traditional Celtic and Nordic acoustic ensemble, who will perform on Saturday, June 29 at 8 pm using several instruments from the exhibit.

Also on exhibit in the Community Gallery are artworks by members of the Carroll County Camera Club in a show titled “Lens Art” featuring new works in a variety of photographic styles.

The public is invited to a … reception for both exhibits on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 5 to 7 pm. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and cash bar will be part of the festivities. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Respectfully submitted Councilmember Kevin Dayhoff. Any questions, never hesitate to be in touch.

Westminster Fire Department thanks Weis Markets for the water and the Gatorade

Westminster Fire Department thanks Weis Markets for the water and the Gatorade

In the summertime firefighters and EMS providers go through a lot of water and Gatorade. It is not a luxury.

Westminster Md. June 6, 2019 - - The men and women of the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 would like to thank Weis Markets for donating water and Gatorade for the firefighters and EMS providers.

In the summertime firefighters and EMS providers go through a lot of water and Gatorade. It is not a luxury. When you spend long hours on automobile accidents, fires, and back-to-back EMS calls, staying hydrated is a critical life, safety, and welfare issue.

The best time to stay hydrated is yesterday.

According to Westminster Fire Department President Jamie Petry on Thursday, June 6, 2019, “Weis Markets is collecting water and Gatorade for WFD. Today we picked up almost 3 pallets of water and 2 grocery carts full of Gatorade” Petry added that the department really appreciates the support of the community – and Weis Markets. Thank you.

Commentary Blubaugh: It was a great run, but it's time to cut the cord

Commentary Blubaugh: It was a great run, but it's time to cut the cord

April 7, 2019 by Bob Blubaugh

https://www.carrollcountytimes.com/opinion/columnists/cc-op-blubaugh-040719-story.html

I’m in the process of ending an 18-year relationship.

Decisions like this are never easy. It’s going to be a major change. The house is going to feel a bit empty. I know I’m going to say or do some things out of habit before remembering. The process will be painful at times, but I’m convinced it’s for the best and everyone will be better off.

Yes, after 18 faithful years as a customer, I’m breaking up with DirecTV. I’m cutting the cord.

This doesn’t make me unique. Some 33 million Americans have left pay-TV behind, eschewing cable or satellite television in favor of streaming services. It is estimated that 6 million customers cut the cord last year and that even more will do so this year.

According to techjury.com, nearly all Americans aged 25-34 access some TV content through the internet and 90 percent of young people say they prefer consuming TV this way than via cable or satellite packages.

This demographic, of course, never knew what it was like to grow up with just three channels.
