Time Flies Dayhoff: Fires and general mayhem dominated the April news in days gone by:

“Fires captured the attention of the local newspapers in April many years ago. The American Sentinel reported on April 9, 1898 that a “large coal oil lamp, suspended from the ceiling of the office of Dr. John S. Mathias, this city, broke loose on Wednesday night, fell, exploded and the oil caught fire…”

"Take a break" May 9, 2018 by Kevin Dayhoff

"Take a break" May 9, 2018 by Kevin Dayhoff

Just read: “Take a break!” by Caitlin Kelly – “I know, for some of you — parents, caregivers, those on super-tight budgets, in school — that’s not easy to do…” Find it here: https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/33359/posts/1847859389

I just wrote a parallel piece on the same topic, the need to take a break. I do not do it well. When I farmed, I must have gone as long as 10-years at a time without a vacation. I have been retired since 1999 and I have never learned to take time off. I travel more – but often look upon the travel as opportunities to write and will return home pretty tired from trying to fit in time at the keyboard and keep-up with the travel schedule.

I have never had a paid vacation in my life.

The challenges of being a free-lancer, even though I have a contract with a major publication, are at times overwhelming. Long hours with little pay, increased bureaucracy and time spent on administrative matters; and that nagging thought in the back of my head, that maybe, just maybe, I ought to just give it up and go to work for a fast food restaurant. At least I could get paid, I would take the opportunity to write about my experiences, especially the interactions with the public.

However, I grabbed a paragraph from my piece, it might even be the takeaway: “‘there are incredible health and wellness benefits associated with time off from work.’ And ‘Several studies have demonstrated that taking regular vacation time can be preventative medicine.’” Just saying.

Women Who Know Their Place

Women Who Know Their Place

Happy Monday - - The Monday morning thought of the day to get the week started-out correctly. This was shared with me by way of an email by a very wise women in our community. 7May2018 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10213833935216141&set=a.10203968656950350.1073741840.1040426835&type=3&theater

Women Who Know Their Place

Barbara Walters did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before our involvement in the Afghan conflict.

She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to and are happy to, maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?"

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, "Land Mines."

No matter what language you speak or where you go,

Moral of this story is:

BEHIND EVERY MAN, THERE'S A REALLY SMART WOMAN.

An Open Letter to Carroll County Maryland Sheriff's Department

Wow - but this letter does not surprise me. This is what we do in Carroll County. We have the best law enforcement agencies and best fire companies. Hats off to Cpl. Jeremy Holland and Sheriff Jim DeWees.

[…]

“I debated for a second on who to send the e-mail to. I decided to send it directly to Sheriff Jim DeWees. Thinking it would turn out the way the Florida efforts did, I didn’t expect much, especially being I’m not even the parent, I’m just a concerned friend of the family. Within thirty minutes of the e-mail, Cpl. Jeremy Holland contacted me. When my phone rang, I started tearing up the second he said who he was. For the first time I felt like the right people were in my friend’s corner. After our conversation he contacted both my friend and her husband….”
