McDaniel graduate and Ocean City Realtor Robert Warfield Sr. died Jan. 29, 2016

I recently learned that my distant relative, Robert Warner died on Jan. 23, 2016 of an aneurysm in Ocean City at the age of 75.

Mr. Warfield attended Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, where I had the pleasure of enjoying his company on a number of occasions, including the dedication of the Warfield Tennis Courts on October 29, 2005.

I also served with him on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund committee in the early 2000s when I was an elected official with the city of Westminster. We were both appointed by our friend, Gov. Robert L. Erhlich.

We were distant relatives. We both descended from one of five Warfield brothers that settled in central-Maryland in the 1600s, in the area we know today where Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, and Carroll County meet. According to unsubstantiated oral tradition, we could both trace our ancestry back to Gov. Edwin Warfield, 1904-1908 (Democrat.)

Mr. Robert was bright and charming, and had a sense of old-school grace and manners that was compelling and charismatic. Above all, not only was he quite capable and competent, he was nice.

My colleague at the Baltimore Sun, Jacques Kelly, wrote a fitting tribute to him on January 29, 2016:

Robert E. Warfield Sr., Ocean City real estate firm co-owner

Robert E. Warfield Sr., a former co-owner of an Ocean City real estate firm and a McDaniel College trustee, died of an aneurysm Jan. 23 at his Ocean City home. He was 75.

Born in Silver Spring, he was the son of Lt. Col. William Edwin Warfield, who died in the invasion of Normandy in 1944, and Esther Stanley.

He was a Montgomery Blair High School graduate and received a degree in economics from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. He played football and golf, and wrestled. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity.

He met his future wife, Margaret Ann "Peggy" Hoey, at a sock hop during their freshman year.

"We've been dancing ever since," she said. "Bobby always did the right thing."

Mr. Warfield served as a second lieutenant in the Army and was assigned to its 29th Division in Korea.

40 Carroll and Baltimore Co. firefighters respond to spring woods fire

40 Carroll and Baltimore Co. firefighters respond to spring woods fire at N. Gorsuch and Leister’s School Road north of Westminster

Woods fire in muddy conditions leads to stuck fire vehicle

March 1, 2016 by Jon Kelvey Carroll County Times

It took Carroll and Baltimore county firefighters two hours to contain a large woods fire in a remote location off Hampstead Mexico Road on Tuesday afternoon, working in muddy and dangerous conditions, according to fire officials.

The first call for a brush fire in a remote location bordered by North Gorsuch, Gablehammer and Leister School roads came in at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday, according to Public Information Officer Kevin Dayhoff of the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department. More than 40 firefighters and 18 pieces of equipment — including an all-terrain vehicle — responded from stations including Westminster, Manchester, Hampstead, Reese, and Lineboro.
Upon arrival on the scene, it was discovered that 1.5 to 2 acres of woodland were burning in a parcel far from the paved road that was difficult to access, according to Dayhoff.

Brush, field and woods fires in early spring or late winter can be particularly hazardous, according to information provided by Westminster fire company Lt. Brett Pearce, because while the ground remains frozen, the top layer can thaw, providing dry tinder for a fast-moving fire while simultaneously remaining muddy enough to make firefighter maneuvers difficult.

Tuesday's fire was also fanned by windy conditions, Dayhoff said.

EMS technology extends careers at the Westminster Md Vol Fire Co http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2016/03/carroll-county-times-ems-technology.html

Retrieved Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Volunteers at our local fire companies sometimes put their lives on the line battling blazes, but a majority of the calls these departments receive are to respond to medical emergencies. While — for the volunteer responders at least — they aren't facing a life or death situation for these calls, they are often putting wear and tear on their bodies, which shortens careers.

So we were happy to see the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department demonstrate last week the latest technology to be deployed by the department, Stryker Power Load System stretcher, which allows patients to be loaded and easily put into ambulances, saving the stress on volunteers' limbs and spines.

Fire Department Lt. Brett Pearce told us that about half of the department's line-of-duty retirements for emergency medical service workers each year are due to back injuries, which occur when lifting and carrying people out of their homes on a stretcher.

[…]

Yet, that's exactly the situation volunteers at some of these companies are facing. Westminster Volunteer Fire Department alone responded to 5,743 EMS calls last year, making it one of the busiest volunteer agencies in the state, according to the department's Public Information Officer Kevin Dayhoff. For almost every EMS call, a paramedic is lifting a stretcher four times — in and out at the scene and again at the hospital. While we'd like to think they follow proper form every time, we know that isn't realistic, especially when time is of the essence for the patient.

Morton's Towing and Recovery is the heavy accident recovery outfit that responded to the accident Friday morning in Carroll County

Sunday, Feb, 21, 2016

Morton's Towing and Recovery is the heavy accident recovery outfit that responded to the horrible accident Friday morning, Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at Kate Wagner Road and Rte 27 in Carroll County Maryland. Morton’s was amazing.

For more information go to:

They arrived quickly, well-staffed, well-prepared, and equipped - and came with some of the biggest pieces of equipment I have ever seen except for perhaps in the Marine Crops in the early 1970s or perhaps when I did high steel work and bridges in the mid-1970s.

They were highly skilled, well-trained, professional, courteous, compassionate, and worked extremely well as a team with the Carroll County First responders on the scene. But perhaps most importantly, it is not good enough to be the best, you have to be nice. And you are not good if you are not nice. These were some of the nicest folks.

Same goes for our local responders…

We can be so proud of our community. We are there for each other.

We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the men and woman who responded to the accident early Friday morning. The accident scene was very difficult, upsetting, dangerous, and freezing cold involving over 60 first responders.

The incident commander was a seasoned, compassionate, professional, and highly trained veteran of many-many fire, natural disaster, and accident responses. The incident commander was extremely competent and ran the operation like clockwork.

The local Carroll County volunteer first responders left their homes and families in the middle of the night and volunteered to come to the aid and assistance of someone in distress. They did it with a great deal of professionalism, used all the hours and hours of intense training for a greater good. They did it with a great deal of skill and competence. Many folks from other parts of the state remarked at the high level of professionalism and skill exhibited by Carroll County first responders. Many were especially impressed as to how well we worked as a team.

A big thank you to our first responders and Morton’s – God Bless you for all your work.
