Dayhoff said firefighters found moderate smoke and extinguished a fire in the first apartment at 6:29 p.m. Units from Pleasant Valley; New Windsor and Baltimore County fire departments as well as the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Westminster Police Department assisted.

Civil War Trust: Civil War Casualties

Civil War Trust: Civil War Casualties

Retrieved September 14, 2015 the Civil War Trust website

THE COST OF WAR: KILLED, WOUNDED, CAPTURED, AND MISSING

The Civil War was America's bloodiest conflict.  The unprecedented violence of battles such as Shiloh, Antietam, Stones River, and Gettysburg shocked citizens and international observers alike.  Nearly as many men died in captivity during the Civil War as were killed in the whole of the Vietnam War.  Hundreds of thousands died of disease.  Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives in the line of duty.  Taken as a percentage of today's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls.

[…]

Consequences

Gettysburg dead

The Battle of Gettysburg left approximately 7,000 corpses in the fields around the town. Family members had to come to the battlefield to find their loved ones in the carnage. (Library of Congress)

Approximately one in four soldiers that went to war never returned home.  At the outset of the war, neither army had mechanisms in place to handle the amount of death that the nation was about to experience.  There were no national cemeteries, no burial details, and no messengers of loss.  The largest human catastrophe in American history, the Civil War forced the young nation to confront death and destruction in a way that has not been equaled before or since.

Recruitment was highly localized throughout the war.  Regiments of approximately one thousand men, the building block of the armies, would often be raised from the population of a few adjacent counties.  Soldiers went to war with their neighbors and their kin.  The nature of recruitment meant that a battlefield disaster could wreak havoc on the home community.

The 26th North Carolina, hailing from seven counties in the western part of the state, suffered 714 casualties out of 800 men during the Battle of Gettysburg.  The 24th Michigan squared off against the 26th North Carolina at Gettysburg and lost 362 out of 496 men.  Nearly the entire student body of Ole Miss--135 out 139--enlisted in Company A of the 11th Mississippi.  Company A, also known as the "University Greys" suffered 100% casualties in Pickett's Charge.  Eighteen members of the Christian family of Christianburg, Virginia were killed during the war.  It is estimated that one in three Southern households lost at least one family member.

One in thirteen surviving Civil War soldiers returned home missing one or more limbs.  Pre-war jobs on farms or in factories became impossible or nearly so.  This led to a rise in awareness of veterans' needs as well as increased responsibility and social power for women.  For many, however, there was no solution.  Tens of thousands of families slipped into destitution.

Second Saturday Salon Group
September 12 through November 7, 2015
Opening:  Saturday, September 12 5:30-7:30

The word “salon” is familiar to many as it refers to people joining together to discuss and promote art, music, poetry, and literature.  It was in this spirit that the “Second Saturday Salon” was created: A group dedicated to sharing creative efforts in a wholly supportive, nonjudgmental environment. The Second Saturday Salon meets in an atmosphere of camaraderie and good fellowship, and its members’ work is made stronger by friendships, mutual encouragement, and gentle feedback.
Please join us at 5:30pm on Saturday, September 12, which is Second Saturday in Westminster, for the opening of “Works by the Second Saturday Salon Group,” and partake in the generous and vibrant spirit of “salon!”
For more images from the Second Saturday Salon, please look at the OTA website under "Special Events."

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

Midnight Madness – It's not a Second Saturday, but lots of fun during Fall Fest in Westminster. On Friday, September 25, 6pm to midnight, shoppers at Off Track Art will receive a 20% discount throughout the gallery.  If you’ve had your eye on a special piece, you know when to shop!  We'll have musicians playing classic rock and several of the artists will be in the gallery to help you make your selections--and there's so much to choose from!  It's a great night to visit Off Track Art

Oyster Stroll – Saturday, October 10, 12noon to 4pm.  Off Track Art will be hosting an oyster farmer shucking fresh oysters on the half-shell in front of the gallery. Off Track will have fun specially priced oyster & pearl jewelry and the Second Saturday Pop-Up Art Market will be in full swing.  This event is in cooperation with Coastal Conservation Maryland; all the oyster shells will be reserved to start to build a “Westminster” reef in the Bay.  Full event schedule here.

WORLD FAMOUS FRIESIAN STALLION

Frederick The Horse’s Stunning Beauty
This amazing horse is known as Frederick the Great and he lives up to his name. His beauty is stunning and is known as one of the top stallions in the world. He lives in the Ozarks in the United States and his breed, the Friesian stallion has almost went extinct three times. Friesians are most often recognized for their black coat, but can also be chestnut. They stand on average of 6 foot 3 inches. For their size they are very graceful and nimble. It is believed in the Middle Ages they were in great demand to be war horses throughout Europe.

Thankfully today with careful breeding the Friesian horse is growing in numbers. With a beauty such as Frederick, it’s no wonder he is becoming quite a celebrity. Watching him in action showing off his speed yet grace and even his playful side, this horse is an absolute star.

Top Ten Exercises to Become a Better Horseperson

Top Ten Exercises to Become a Better Horseperson

 10. Drop a heavy steel object on your foot. Don't pick it up right away. Shout, "Get Off, Stupid! GET OFF!"

 9. Leap out of a moving vehicle and practice "relaxing into the fall." Roll lithely into a ball and spring to your feet.

 8. Learn to grab your checkbook out of your purse and write out a $200 check without even looking down.

 7. Jog long distances carrying a halter and a carrot. Go ahead and tell the neighbors what you are doing -- they might as well know now.

 6. Affix a pair of reins to a moving freight train and practice pulling to a halt. Smile as if you are having fun.

 5. Hone your fibbing skills: “see, hon. moving hay bales is FUN!" and, “no, really, I'm glad your lucky performance and multimillion dollar horse won the blue ribbon. I am just thankful that my hard work and actual ability won me second place"

 4. Practice dialing your chiropractor's number with both arms paralyzed to the shoulder and one foot anchoring the lead rope of a frisky horse.

 3. Borrow the US Army's slogan: Be All That You Can Be -- bitten, thrown, kicked, slimed, trampled, frozen...

 2. Lie face down in a puddle of mud in your most expensive riding clothes and repeat to yourself, "This is a learning experience, this is a learning experience, this is..."

The hugging horse

The hugging horse

Hilarious Horse Won’t Let Man Stop Scratching His Neck

Levi the horse is not only gigantic, but also has a
wonderful sense of humor. He is meeting Tom for the first time and when Tom
scratches his neck they become instant friends – at least according to Levi.
Tom is the brother-in-law to the horse’s owner Janelle. To give you a size
reference, Tom is 6 foot 2 inches tall. Levi is a very tall horse! Tom decided
to give him a few friendly scratches on the neck, and the way Levi responds has
everyone laughing.

Each time Tom tries to walk away, Levi ropes him right back
in with his neck. Then he stretches it out obviously telling him this neck
scratch is nowhere being over just yet. And who can blame him? Everyone loves a
good back scratch, and for this horse, it is no different. What a hilarious
moment to catch on film and no doubt Janelle has a very smart and lovable horse
in Levi!
