Stories from the Hill: Join the Rush, Posted on February 6, 2013 by Cassie

Stories from the Hill: Join the Rush, Posted on February 6, 2013 by Cassie

There are eight social sororities and fraternities on campus. But there are also two lesser known service groups: APO, a service fraternity, and Gamma Sigma Sigma, a service sorority (although both are coed). Last night, Gamma Sigma Sigma held their Meet the Sisters event. Now I know, there are many reservations and assumptions that come with the “Greek” title, and I had many of my own. I chose Gamma Sig because not only did it look great on my resume, but it actually was a great deal of fun getting to know this wide variety of girls. My MIT (member-in-training) class even had three guys, the first in several years). But more than that, this organization is focused on serving the community through volunteer service for great local groups.

Special Westminster Fire Department meeting prayers for Sam Reaver, Baby Cooper and prayers for healing for Mason Stansbury

Special Westminster Fire Department meeting prayers for Sam Reaver, Baby Cooper and prayers for healing for Mason Stansbury

February 6, 2013

The Lord be with you.

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your direction and to seek guidance.

Please join us as we gather for tonight’s meeting.

We pray for healing for Mason Stansbury, the son of Matt and Michelle Stansbury and grandson of brother firefighter Robin Stansbury.

O God of grace and glory, we lift up to you and your care Baby Cooper…

Today, we also commend to your love and care our sister Sam Reaver

We thank you for giving her to us to know and to love as a companion in our pilgrimage on earth and our service to our community.

In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn and be with those at Sam’s funeral this evening.

Give us faith to see that death has been swallowed up in the victory of our Lord, so that we may live in confidence and hope until, by your call, we are gathered to our heavenly home in the company of all your saints; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Thank you for being the constant source of wisdom, courage, and perseverance.

Amen

Kevin E. Dayhoff,
Westminster Fire Department and Maryland Trooper’s Association Lodge #20 Chaplain

The Tentacle Kevin Dayhoff: Carroll County Commissioner John L Armacost – R.I.P. http://tinyurl.com/bzdqmtk

The Tentacle Kevin Dayhoff: Carroll County Commissioner John L Armacost – R.I.P. http://tinyurl.com/bzdqmtk

Many were saddened recently to learn that the well-respected longstanding community leader and former Carroll County commissioner, John L. Armacost, died January 13.

I had the privilege and honor to work for Commissioner Armacost in several capacities in the 1980s when he was in office from 1982 to 1986 with Jeffrey Griffith and William V. Lauterbach. From 1986 to 1990, Commissioner Armacost served with Commissioner Griffith and then-newcomer, Julia Walsh Gouge.

In those years I served the county during Commissioner Armacost’s term in office on a number of state and county boards and commissions including the county landscape manual committee and the tree preservation committee, in addition to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forestry Board, and numerous agricultural committees with the University of Maryland and the County Extension Service.

I also worked with Dr. Raymond J. Miller, the University of Maryland's Vice Chancellor for Agricultural Affairs, on panel luncheons on present and future challenges to the Carroll and Frederick County agricultural community. The sustainability of the business of agriculture was consistently an important issue for Commissioner Armacost and I recall well his keen interest in those discussions.

Commissioner Armacost served as president of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners from 1982 to 1990. During his tenure he was well known for his sound conservative management of the county budget and his thorough knowledge of the nuts and bolts of how a county works on a day-to-day basis… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5609

Kevin Dayhoff - Eagle Archive: Community's history comes to rest at Westminster Cemetery

On Jan. 24, 1790, a gentleman in our community by the name of Christian Yingling died. His name and his passing are significant, because Yingling's is believed to be the first burial in the historic Westminster Cemetery on Church Street.

It is accepted that the Westminster community started the Westminster Cemetery by utilizing the 1.5-acre grounds surrounding the Union Meeting House in 1790.

In 1864, "the company purchased twelve-and-a-half surrounding acres from the estate of John Fisher (the first Burgess of the City of Westminster) and the cemetery reached its current dimensions," according "Westminster Cemetery, Carroll County Cemeteries, Vol. V, Part III," by the Carroll County Genealogical Society in 2004. The authoritative reference book lists all the burials in the cemetery and includes a brief history.

By working together, our community will be able to maintain this institution beyond another 300 years. If you would like to make a contribution toward the restoration of the William Winchester grave site or for the general maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery, contact the cemetery company president, former Westminster Councilwoman Suzanne Albert, at suzannealbert@comcast.net, or call her at 410-871-1180. You may also mail a check to: Westminster Cemetery Company, P.O. Box 1251, Westminster, MD 21158-1251… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0127-20130122,0,6575174.story
