Commissioner Armacost's fiscal conservatism had its roots in Carroll upbringing - By Kevin E. Dayhoff, http://tinyurl.com/a4882bw

Kevin Dayhoff: Armacost's fiscal conservatism had its roots in Carroll upbringing http://tinyurl.com/a4882bw

Well-respected community leader and former Carroll County commissioner John L. Armacost died on Jan. 13 at age 89. During his tenure as a two-term commissioner, Armacost was known for his sound conservative management of the county budget and his knowledge of the nuts and bolts of how a county works on a day-to-day basis.

He served as president of the Board of County Commissioners from 1982 to 1990. He opted to not run for another term in 1990…. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-county/towson/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0203-20130130,0,3712037.story

Carroll Co Chapter NAACP, McDaniel, and Carroll Community College celebrate Martin Luther King with music

Along with 80 other folks from throughout Carroll County, including a broad cross section of local elected officials; I attended the 10th annual Carroll County NAACP Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast at Martin’s Westminster.

Recently Explore Baltimore County ran an article on the annual celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King at McDaniel College… Below, please find a portion of that article and a link to the rest of the article in the Baltimore Sun.

'Celebrating the Dream' features music with memories of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 25, 2013 ExploreBaltimoreCounty http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/baltimorecounty/news/community/ph-ce-mlk-celebration-0127-20130125,0,5392837.story

Though Jan. 21 was a school holiday for students around the country, a number of students were on a school campus earlier this week.

McDaniel College welcomed nearly 100 Carroll County schoolchildren on Monday to the fourth annual Martin Luther King Day of celebration and reflection.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., students of all ages participated in a variety of activities that celebrated King's life and provided a service to the community.

[…]

Carroll County Community College also provided supplies for the students to make cards for senior citizens as a service project.

"We recognize Dr. King's accomplishments and methods of nonviolence and his service to the community," said Pamela Zappardino, co-director of Ira and Mary Zepp Center for Non-violence and Peace Education, about the event. "It is a day on, rather than a day off. A component of the day is doing a service project."

The center at McDaniel College was a sponsor of the event, as was the NAACP.

"These things are always fun," Zappardino said. "The kids are great."

History of Giulianova Groceria, 11 E. Main St. in Westminster, MD

December 27, 2006

Giulianova Groceria, http://www.brothersun.biz/history.html: Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Street community for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs.

Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio.

After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill.  Don't bother driving to Philadelphia, New York, or even Baltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!

Big fat Greek surprises January 30, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/bf877cf

Big fat Greek surprises January 30, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff http://tinyurl.com/bf877cf

Kevin E. Dayhoff http://twitpic.com/bzmojj

In spite of the profoundly dulled senses that come as a result of a day of international travel, Greece takes hold of you the very moment you arrive at the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport.

The airport, just about 20 kilometers above the sprawling megalopolis of Athens, opened on March 29, 2001, and it is named for a freedom fighter, revolutionary, statesman and charismatic leader from the early 1900s, who died in 1936...

I had the honor of visiting a monument in his honor near his hometown in Therisos gorge near Chania in Crete on January 7, and his gravesite memorial in Akrotiri, which is also near Chania, the next day.

This was my first trip to Greece… I traveled to Greece with a group of McDaniel College students and faculty members. It was more of an academic experience as opposed to a vacation, if you will.

Nevertheless, this article and several more that I researched and pre-wrote while in Greece should not be considered reporting – or the profile of a country – but rather a collection of thoughts and vignettes that lie more in the tradition of a travelogue.

After a few days in Greece, one is struck with a number of surprising observations; nothing profound – some amusing and some mundane. However, there were quite a few things about Greece that I did not expect… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5594

December 12, 2012 The Ghost of Berlusconi Rises Again Kevin E. Dayhoff
While Greece wraps up a six-month effort to secure a new bailout payment, and Washington continues to fail to understand the seriousness of its fiscal responsibilities, the world’s financial markets wobbled earlier in the week when it saw the ghost of Italy’s former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5512

Athens, Greece, January 12 – Demonstrators once again took to the streets in central Athens Saturday afternoon, in another of a long series of strikes, demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience that have rocked Greece since a worldwide economic downturn officially got underway in December 2007.

It was four years ago – in 2009 – that Greece kicked-off the year by announcing its budget deficit would be 12.9% of GDP, more than four times the European Union's 3% limit. Greece was first admitted into the EU in 1981, and in 2001 it joined the Eurozone… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5566

Various recent news accounts indicate that unemployment approaches 25 percent in Greece. Pensions have been reduced and salaries slashed anywhere from 30 to 60 percent.

Meanwhile last Saturday began with signs posted in the Metro that read: “Notice to Passengers. On Saturday 12/1/13, stations, Penepistimio, Syntagma, will remain closed from 10:00 for safety reason…”

Since 2010, Syntagma Square has served as a barometer for rising civil discontent over Greece’s ever-worsening economic crisis. In the past it has been the most popular locale for mass protests and tent-city like occupations, some of which have turned unexpectedly violent in which police have responded en masse with batons, shields and tear gas...

On Saturday, I witnessed more than 5,000 or 6,000 demonstrators marching past the National Archaeological Museum, in a dense, well-organized and loud processional that chanted a Greek chorus of anti-government slogans in a carefully choreographed cat-and-mouse theatrical routine with a full accompaniment of motorcycle police and a phalanx of paramilitary shock riot-police.
