Greg Cantori takes over as president of Maryland Nonprofits next Monday at a time when nonprofit organizations and their clients – like many businesses in Maryland small and large – have been battered by the economy.
“Not only did they have to weather this great recession, they have had to take up the slack” from the impact of the economy’s increasing demand for social services, Cantori said in an interview. “I think it’s been such an incredibly challenging time in the last five years.”
Cantori was named last month to head the association that includes 1,400 nonprofit organizations and 300 associate members. He moves over from a brief four-month stint as the executive director of the Downtown Sailing Center, but he is best known for his 12 years managing the operations of the Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Foundation and its philanthropy to Catholic and educational institutions.
There are 28,000 organizations in Maryland designated as 501(c)(3) by the Internal Revenue Service, meaning that contributions to these “public charities” can be tax deductible. … http://marylandreporter.com/2012/09/25/new-president-of-md-nonprofits-group-takes-over-in-challenging-time/

Westminster precinct reports heavy, and steady, turnout

It was almost anti-climactic at the polls in Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.
After a year of robo-calls, tons of campaign literature, debates and nonstop news coverage, election day came to Carroll County — and the turnout was heavy and steady.
Just after 4 p.m., as temperatures dropped, there were plenty of hardy campaign workers at the polls at Westminster Elementary School. Joy Fisher and Erin Snell and Jennifer and Molly Harvilak were busy greeting voters and handing out literature in support of Question 6, the Civil Marriage Protection Act.
"Been here since the morning — and we're cold," Fisher said in between shivers… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-election-day-1106-20121106,0,1592306.story

Many have asked my opinion on the ballot questions. There
are so many conflicting TV ads and even mailings from "Republican
Leaders" which have confused the issues.
This is how I voted and the reason why:
Against Question 1.
If passed, this would require candidates for the ORPHANS COURT JUDGES in
Prince Georges County to be lawyers. I believe lawyers can run for these
offices and if citizens elect them, they can serve, but I don't believe other
citizens should be discriminated against.
Against Question 2
This is the same as question 1 except it applies to Baltimore County.
For Question 3 This amendment removes elected officials
from office upon the conviction of a felony rather than waiting until the
sentencing. As the law is now, the elected official can appeal and appeal and
stay in office.
Against Question
4 This law permits illegal immigrants
to pay in-state tuition at our state supported colleges and universities. I
believe that if children were brought here illegally, they should follow the
procedures to become legal. Federal Law prohibits employers from hiring illegal
people so after the taxpayers pay to educate them, they are not legally allowed
to work.
Against Question 5
The Congressional Redistricting Map just does not make sense. It has been
gerrymandered so that no one can be fairly represented in Congress. For
example, what does Ocean City have in common with Taneytown or what does
Garrett County have in common with Montgomery County?
Against Question 6
This law redefines MARRIAGE as we know it. In recent years, same-sex
couples have been given many of the rights they have requested such as hospital
visitation rights. They have been offered "Civil Unions," but they
want the term "Marriage" changed. This has far reaching ramifications
such as changing the school curriculum and dangerous consequences for ministers
who preach from the Bible. Although they argue that ministers would not be
affected if they did not want to perform a wedding ceremony for a same-sex
couple, look what has happened to the Catholic hospitals and doctors who now
must perform abortions and provide birth control.
Against Question 7 This law expands gambling in Maryland.
This is a bad bill for the citizens in Maryland.
1. The schools are funded by a formula called "The
Thornton Formula" and this determines how much money each school system
should receive. The money from gaming will go into the EDUCATION TRUST FUND.
This will free up general fund money which is normally spent on education to be
used for other things. Just as money has been taken out of THE TRANSPORTATION
TRUST FUND, money will be taken out of the EDUCATION TRUST FUND for other
things.
2. Last year several bills were introduced to
"lock" the transportation trust fund so the money would only be used
for transportation purposes. These bills failed. That fund was raided for many
other uses. I don't Trust money in these trust funds to go for their intended
use.
3. The "Republican Leaders" Michael Steel and
Audrey Scott, from whom you have received mailings live in Prince Georges
County and the law is written so that the local jurisdiction where the casino
is located will receive a large percentage of the tax revenue. That is the
reason they are in favor of this bill.
4. In May, a Special Session was held to raise your taxes
and this gaming bill lowers the taxes for the casino owners.
5. SCHOOLS WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY MORE MONEY THAT THE THIRNTON
FORMULA REQUIRES. EVEN THE TEACHERS KNOW THESE STATEMEENTS IN THE AS ARE NOT
TRUE. I HAVE BEEN ON THE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE ALL THE
SPECIAL FUNDS RAIDED AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. THEY PROMISE TO "PAY
BACK" BUT DON'T. Please vote against this bill and let the legislature
come back in a regular session where all interested parties have an opportunity
to have input.

Sandy – The Historic Unwelcome Guest
Sandy – The Historic Unwelcome Guest
October 31, 2012 Kevin E. Dayhoff http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5433
The last thing we expected, in a year full of the
unexpected, was a late tropical storm, with a friendly moniker like Hurricane
Sandy, making an unwanted appearance on our calendar.
For too many, it was an uninvited guest in our living room.
For others, it came and went, leaving us in the dark, with fewer trees, and in
return, left behind plenty of water – as in water, water everywhere.
You know, in Maryland, once the trees have begun to show-off
their fall season colorful display, the days have started to get shorter, and
the temperature leaves a nip in the air, one begins to think snow, ice, and
winter – but not hurricanes.
We often associate hurricane season with unpleasant weather
events that ruin the best of plans during the summer and fall months of June
through November. Those of us who enjoy visiting the south during the summer
have learned, in some instances the hard way, to keep an eye on the weather.
Nothing can ruin a rare vacation – or even a writing assignment – worse than
coordinating your schedule with the random vagaries of a hurricane.
We usually endure the wrath of hurricanes and tropical
storms during the months of July and September. Once Labor Day comes and goes,
we usually think that we’re in the clear; well, except for “nor’easters,”
storms that resemble ‘winter-hurricanes,’ that form in the southeast and travel
north.
The storm quickly caught the eye of many seasoned hurricane
scientists who dubbed it Frankenstorm… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5433

Taylorsville United Methodist Church: The Story Chap 9 Intro Accepting Foreigners
The Story Chapter 9 Introduction
OCT 30, 2012
Ruth gleaning the fields of grain.
Chapter 9 continues in The Story with a family saga that is so real that it could almost be any of our families. This story could be placed in almost any place or context. It is about a family of Israelites that could not find food during the famine and so they went to a foreign country, Moab to find work and food. Moab is across the Jordan river from their home village of Bethlehem.
After Naomi’s husband and sons die she decides to go back home to Bethlehem, one daughter-in-law, Ruth comes with her.
Let’s tell the story of Ruth a little differently: There is famine in the land, the family of 3 was starving, so they left Mexico, El Salvador, (you fill in the place) and they went to the United States where there were jobs. The boys marry local women, but then the dad and the boys all die, leaving all three women on their own. The Mom decides to go back to Mexico; do the daughters-in-law go back with her?
[…]
This foreign woman ultimately became part of the genealogy of Jesus, the ultimate Redeemer!
