Homeowners must apply for property-tax credit or lose it by Jamie Smith Hopkins, The Baltimore Sun

Homeowners must apply for property-tax credit or lose it

State launches online feature to show which owners are set

By Jamie Smith Hopkins, The Baltimore Sun April 3, 2012

Tens of thousands of Maryland homeowners who haven't already applied for the Homestead Property Tax Credit have until the end of the year to do so or lose the often-valuable break.

The deadline was set so long ago — 2007 — that some residents might not remember if they applied. State assessors, hoping to cut down on anxious calls, launched an online feature Monday that notes whether a property's application is in and processed.

"We get such tremendous volume of calls, and one of the unfortunate things is, when people do call … they sometimes get a busy signal," said Robert E. Young, director of the state Department of Assessments and Taxation. "It's so much easier just to go to the website."

The owners of 807,000 homes in the state are getting a break on their property taxes thanks to the homestead credit, which acts as a limit on annual increases. About 150,000 owners haven't sent in their applications, according to the assessments agency.

The statewide homestead program is only for primary residences. It keeps the amount of assessed value a homeowner is taxed on from increasing more than 10 percent a year, with even lower caps in most jurisdictions… http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/bs-bz-homestead-application-feature-20120402,0,3243613.story

Ann Coulter vs. Michelle Malkin | Female Conservatives | Sarah Palin | The Daily Caller

Ann Coulter vs. Michelle Malkin | Female Conservatives | Sarah Palin | The Daily Caller:

By Jeff Poor - The Daily Caller

http://dailycaller.com/2012/04/05/coulter-vs-malkin-female-conservatives-clash-over-palin/

Last Sunday, in an appearance on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” conservative columnist and author Ann Coulter took what some have seen as a swipe at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, saying that the eventual Republican candidate shouldn’t pick “a novelty candidate” as their vice presidential nominee because it “would ring too much like Sarah Palin.”

Conservative blogger and commentator Michelle Malkin challenged Coulter’s characterization, suggesting in a post on Monday that Coulter was part of the “war on conservative women” Malkin had opined on a month ago.... http://dailycaller.com/2012/04/05/coulter-vs-malkin-female-conservatives-clash-over-palin/

Joe Peyronnin – Huffington Post: Romney's Veep-Stakes

Romney's Veep-Stakes

Joe Peyronnin NYU Journalism Professor 04/ 2/2012

More leading Republicans are getting on the Romney bandwagon each day in hopes of ending the divisiveness that has characterized much of the Republican primary campaign so far. Even after all of their harsh criticisms, former Senator Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have each said they will support Romney if he ends up getting the party's nomination. But they both, along with Representative Ron Paul, are still campaigning to be their party's standard-bearer.

Rick Santorum shows no signs of easing up. On Sunday, he compared Romney to Senator John McCain, who lost the 2008 election to President Barack Obama. "We came up with someone who wasn't able to win, "Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. "We don't need to repeat that again…

Eagle Archive: Shopping for a silver anniversary present for TownMall

Eagle Archive: Shopping for a silver anniversary present for TownMall

It was Wednesday, March 4, 1987, at 12:45 p.m. that Cranberry Mall — now known as TownMall of Westminster, on Route 140 at Center Street — held its much-anticipated grand opening.

"Cranberry Mall was a long time in coming to Carroll County," recalled a story in the Baltimore Sun in 2000. "A sign planted in farmland flanking Route 140 had boasted that a shopping center was coming soon, but for 15 years nothing happened."

Then it was in 1985 that a New York-based developer bought the land and broke ground for the shopping center, according to newspaper accounts.

Construction continued in earnest in 1986 on the $36 million, 428,392-retail square foot facility. The March 4, 1987, edition of the Gettysburg Times reported that the mall created "close to 1,000 jobs ... (and) generated $9 million in local contracts. Projected tax revenues include $2.6 million in sales taxes, $1.6 million in income taxes and $543,000 in property taxes." … http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/opinion-talk/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0311-20120307,0,6391220.story

Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company - April 2, 1971: Now's The Time To Rid Property Of Fire Hazards

Now's The Time To Rid Property Of Fire Hazards - Spring into action against fire hazards now that Spring Clean-Up time is here, is the advice of the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company.

Trash and rubbish are breeding places for fires. The following is a four-point program for spring clean-up action:

1. Clean out stacks of newspapers and magazines; discard old clothing, mattresses, furniture, lamp shades, draperies, etc., that clutter up the attic, basement and closets.

2. Do the same clean up job in your home workshop. Get rid of shavings, oily rags, old paint, etc.

3. Get after the trash in the garage and remove the dead grass and brush around and near the house.

4. Have your furnace, chimneys, and stoves inspected and cleaned now. Don't wait until fall when you may get caught by the first cold snap. A little "elbow grease" now may save a lot of grief later. And if you have to burn trash, etc., watch it closely so it will not get out of control.
