Aaron Davis: O’Malley urges lawmakers to consider 15-cent gas-tax hike

Washington Post Maryland Politics

O’Malley urges lawmakers to consider 15-cent gas-tax hike

As promised, Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) used the start of the legislature’s special session on redistricting Monday to begin talking about jobs, and offered more clarity about suggestions he’s made since August that he would support higher taxes to boost spending on public infrastructure.

O’Malley said the General Assembly must begin considering a 15-cent increase to Maryland’s gas tax to fund road construction, public transit and other transportation projects. The governor also suggested he would seek an unspecified expansion to the state’s capital budget to fund school construction and other infrastructure needs when the General Assembly convenes in January.

John Fritze and Annie Linskey, The Baltimore Sun: Congressional redistricting set for final debate

Congressional redistricting set for final debate

After clearing Senate, map heads to the House

Maryland's House of Delegates is poised to give final approval Wednesday to Gov. Martin O'Malley's plan to redraw the state's eight congressional districts, but not before lawmakers engage in a final showdown over the controversial map.
Despite objections over how the new map treats minority voters in the Washington suburbs, the measure has sailed through this week's special session of the General Assembly without significant opposition or delay. Republican House leaders said they plan to offer a robust debate Wednesday, even if it appears Democrats have enough support to advance the plan.
"I would strongly disagree with the fact that if you think you don't have the votes, let's just move on and not have the debate," said Del. Anthony O'Donnell, the House Republican leader from Southern Maryland. "Part of the creation of the legislative record is the debate."
[...]
The proposed map would pack Democratic voters into the Western Maryland district long held by Republican Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett, creating an opportunity for Democrats to control seven of eight members of the state's congressional delegation. Some critics say mapmakers accomplished the goal by splitting blacks, Hispanics and Asians into multiple districts, diluting their voting power.
[...]
Republicans in the House expect to offer three proposals to change the map, O'Donnell said. A handful of Democrats plan to offer an alternative proposal supported by Rep. Donna F. Edwards, a Prince George's Democrat who has become one of the most vocal critics of O'Malley's proposal.

The roads in and around Hagerstown’s downtown area are beginning to show their age.
And without the money to repair them — or the inclination among elected officials to borrow the funds — city engineer Rodney Tissue says he has taken to using innovative ways to stretch public dollars.
Rather than employing traditional materials to overlay deteriorating roads, Tissue said cracked sealing, a temporary fix for pocked roads that delays costly resurfacing, and slurry seal, an industrial strength driveway sealing material, are becoming common.

Kevin E. Dayhoff - TheTentacle.com: Bank Transfer Day

October 19, 2011

Bank Transfer Day

The continuing saga of the crusade against the vampire squids… I’m just saying…

While everyone was distracted by what Charles Krauthammer delightfully described as, the “Starbucks-sipping, Levi’s-clad, iPhone-clutching protesters (of the Occupy Wall Street movement who) denounce corporate America even as they weep for Steve Jobs, corporate titan, billionaire eight times over…,” a new social uprising term has entered the public discourse. Saturday, November 5 is “Bank Transfer Day.”

According to the uprising’s meager beginnings on Facebook, created by a small business owner, Kristen Christian, 27, a small art gallery owner in Los Angles, citizens are encouraged to take their money out of the blood-sucking vampire squid mega-banks and put it in smaller community banks or more specifically, credit unions.

Ms. Christian owns “Le Spec,” an independent art gallery. She spoke for many when she answered a question from Jen Doll, in a Village Voice article: Why did you decide to do this?

“Mostly just, I was tired. I was tired of being charged bank fee after bank fee after bank fee… When they decided to react so negatively to the Durbin Amendment, that made me sick…”

As opposed to the Occupy Wall Street protests, which appear to be a mobocracy of themeless, clueless anarchists on holiday, Bank Transfer Day has a well-defined and articulated goal, with a specific action plan.

Even National Public Radio, which never met a leftist cause it could not wholeheartedly support, with our tax dollars, could not fathom what the Occupy Wall Street protestors were trying to say

Much of the mainstream media and leftist Democrats want you to believe that Bank Transfer Day is an offshoot grass-roots effort spawned by the Occupy Wall Street anarchists-without-a-clue.

Nothing could be farther from the truth...
