Kevin Dayhoff Westminster Patch: The first Carroll County Firemen’s Association Convention, May 15, 1924

Fire department volunteers pose with fire suppression equipment in front of the Westminster fire station at 66 East Main Street in Westminster in a photo believed to have been taken around 1924. The station was located there from 1896 to 1998. Photo courtesy of the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No.1.

In June of 1924 volunteers from the six fire departments in existence at the time in Carroll County were no doubt comparing notes at their monthly meetings after the first ever-annual convention of the newly formed Carroll County Firemen’s Association...

Westminster councilman Dennis Frazier city update

This past meeting was packed-the voting date and time for city elections was changed-second Tuesday in May from 7-8 this now puts us on the same date as 4 other municipalities in the county.

We approved a new commutation system VOIP that will work faster and better than the current one and cost thousands less.

We are moving forward with changing the city's health care provider, one that offers the same coverage as the current but at a little more than $40,000 less per year than who we have now.

We extended a Bio-solids contract for on year than will save the city over $40.00 a ton on disposing of the solids for the next year, we will have to enter into a new contract next year but we are hoping that pricing will be more favorable at that time.

We are going to talk about taking the parking meters off of main street and replacing with signs that say -parking limited to one hour between the hours of 8am and 5 pm Monday -Friday- we are also going to talk about giving each downtown business owner on free permit for parking.

My thinking is if you go to any other shopping center in Westminster you do not have to pay to park -and the owners don't have to pay.   What do you think?

Westminster: No plans to repair Wakefield Fenby Quarry Lime

A “no trespassing” sign rests in front of the lime kiln at the Lime Kiln Interpretive Park, June 1, in Westminster. The historic site suffered a collapsed wall in December (2010) and the city has no immediate plans on repairing the structure.

After looking into grants to pay for Westminster's historic lime kiln which had a wall collapse in December, Director of Recreation and Parks Ron Schroers said chances are repairs won't be happening anytime soon.

The kiln, located near the Wakefield Valley Trail along Tahoma Farm Road, suffered the damage due to years of poor drainage, and Schroers said cost estimates for the repair reached $750,000 to $1 million.

"We've been looking into it but at this point in time we've come up with no grant match to be able to take care of the rebuilding out there," Schroers said.

For years, the city expected the kiln to collapse and fenced it off before it happened, Schroers said. Now the kiln is seen with collapsed rocks and several "no trespassing" signs surrounding it.

City Administrator Marge Wolf said previous repairs on the kiln were funded through Program Open Space, a state program that acquires outdoor recreation and open space areas for public use, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website, www.dnr.state.md.us.

Wolf said funding from Program Open Space has dwindled through the years and the city simply doesn't have the money to repair the lime kiln at this time, but said it is on the city's list of things to be considered if money became available.

Timmi Pierce, executive director of the historical society of Carroll County, said losing the kiln is like losing a piece of our past.

"Anytime a historical building or site goes down it's a loss to our history," Pierce said.

Pierce said she would like to see the site rebuilt, but acknowledged it isn't likely because of economic times.

According to the city's website, www.westgov.com, the lime kiln was in operation by 1844 and sometime after 1905. The kiln was used to turn limestone into limes by farmers.

The kiln and Fenby Farm Quarry are part of Lime Kiln Interpretive Park, where a boulder park and walking trail exist.

"The area is still alive and there's still historical value," Schroers said. "My thought is to try to preserve what is there and fence it in and secure it until we can figure out future plans for it."

Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No.1: Take this Time to Educate Yourself about the Dangers of Heat Exposure

The sun bears down on the Ag Center near Westminster and Carroll County today as temperatures expected to reach the mid 90's.  File photo by Kevin Dayhoff.

Today, “temperatures expected to reach the mid 90's,” and “The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect from noon to 8 p.m.”

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect for Carroll County today from noon to 8 p.m. in addition to an Air Quality Alert.

As we begin to experience excessive periods of heat the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1, along with other health care partners, would like to remind the public of the dangers of prolonged heat exposure...

Some tips concerning heat exposure include...

People and animals should stay indoors.

If you don’t have air-conditioning, go to the malls or stores, cooling locations, or public buildings.

Drink more fluids, but avoid alcohol and high sugar drinks

When going out, wear light clothing and never leave any persons, especially infants or young children, or animals in a closed, parked vehicle

Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others.  Check regularly on: Infants and young children; People aged 65 or older; People who have a mental illness; Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure.

Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.  Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.

For more information see “Heat and Air Quality Alerts in Effect for Carroll County,” call 800-CDC-INFO, or visit their web site.  More information is also available at the Maryland Department of Health.

Se safe out there.
