“Tours of Duty: Carroll County and the Vietnam War”

By Gary D. Jestes and Jay A. Graybeal.

The authors present the stories of Carroll County’s unsung heroes who served their country during the Vietnam War.  Includes biographical sketches, soldiers’ letters, a roster of servicemen, a bibliography of contemporary newspaper articles about the war.  $29

About the book – and the authors, Jay Graybeal and Gary Jestes:

On Wednesday, November 12, 2008, Carroll County Times - http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/ - writer, Carrie Ann Knauer wrote:

Historian shares Carroll County Vietnam stories

In researching for a book on Carroll County’s Vietnam veterans, Jay Graybeal and Gary Jestes found a wealth of material in local newspaper archives and by collecting letters sent between soldiers and their loved ones.

They learned about Lt. Col. Charles I. Miller, who was one of the first Americans stationed in Vietnam, and was in fact part of the team to brief Gen. William Westmoreland, who in June 1964 was appointed the senior military commander of the United States’ armed forces in Vietnam, when he arrived in country.

They interviewed Sgt. Jerry Barnes, who told a story of hearing a scream from the cook one night in the camp and discovered a cobra in the kitchen ready to strike. Barnes, Carroll’s state’s attorney, said he pulled out his M16 without hesitation and shot the snake, refrigerator, stove and about everything else in the kitchen, except the cook, Graybeal said.

They read the stories in Carroll newspapers about the war and the reactions from residents on whether demonstrations were an appropriate way of showing dissatisfaction with American forces’ participation in the conflict.

Graybeal shared these stories Tuesday at the Historical Society of Carroll County’s Box Lunch Talk. Jestes, who was also scheduled to speak Tuesday, was unable to attend because of illness, Graybeal said.

Timmi Pierce, executive director of the Historical Society, said it was fitting to have a talk on the Vietnam veterans Tuesday because Veterans Day fell on the normally scheduled day for the lunch talk. Pierce used the opportunity to recognize the dozen or so veterans in attendance at the talk, including four Vietnam veterans.

“It’s fitting that we’re in this building [American Legion Post 31], which honors veterans seven days a week,” Graybeal said during his opening.

Graybeal is the chief curator of the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pa., where he has been working on the center’s Vietnam collection, which will be dedicated Friday, he said.

Jestes and Graybeal started the research for their book, “Tours of Duty: Carroll County and the Vietnam War,” when Graybeal was still at the Historical Society. They spent more than 10 years on the research and writing before it was published last year, he said.

“We joke it took longer for us to write the book than to fight the war,” Graybeal said.

Graybeal gave a general overview of the timeline of the Vietnam War, then listed some of the Carroll servicemen who are highlighted in the book, including Rick Will Sr., Sgt. Gary Hammett, Capt. Richard N. Dixon and Maj. Harold J. Robertson. Several heads in the audience nodded in recognition of the names and faces being broadcast on the projector screen.

“It’s wrenching to read, but it’s important to see the sacrifices that were made,” Graybeal said of the book.

There was so much dissension surrounding the Vietnam War, and a lot of myths were spun out of that dissension, Graybeal said. He read from a list of exposed myths about Vietnam veterans, which showed that Vietnam soldiers were not as young, uneducated, underprivileged or unwilling as people believed. For example, while the draft got so much attention during the Vietnam War, only one-third of the soldiers to serve in Vietnam were drafted, and two-thirds were voluntary recruits, Graybeal said. Those statistics are the opposite of World War II’s, he said.

Despite people’s personal views, no one can deny the way the war affected the nation and its future, Graybeal said.

“It forever changed our views as Americans of our role in the world,” he said.

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

Dinner at Harry’s Main Street Grille in Westminster Maryland

My family had dinner at Harry’s this evening.  In addition to the delicious traditional food we have come to love and enjoy, the venerable Main Street Westminster restaurant has added some great new items on, literally, a new menu.  I had the new veggie sandwich, which was delightful.  And we got to visit with a number of friends and neighbors.

Check Harry’s out next time you anywhere near Westminster.  The servers are fun and friendly – and from the local community.  It is locally owned; and for three generations, the Sirinakis family has supported the community – especially art and cultural events.

The prices are quite reasonable and all the money you spend at Harry’s stays in Carroll County; supports local workers, and the local community.

Founded in 1946, Harry's Main Street Grille has become a dining landmark in downtown Westminster. Now in its third generation of ownership by the Sirinakis family, Harry's offers a great selection of American cuisine including burgers, paninis, wraps and pastas.

Their famous hot dogs are served Coney Island style with chili, mustard and onions, but definitely not sauerkraut!

Customers who absolutely must insist on having sauerkraut on their hot dogs will have to pay $85 for it in accordance with Harry's longstanding policy... More: http://westminster.patch.com/listings/harrys-main-street-grille

Hat Tip: Mark Yount.  The staff of Junction on approximately October 16, 1971…  According to Yount, “…  (Junction) opened it's doors for business in 1971, but there were many of us that helped fix it up when the county gave it to the non-profit organization in 1970. I remember being in there then at age 15 scraping and painting walls. Little did I know that I would be working there someday for nearly 25 years. Here is a picture from 1971 of many of the youth who helped make this project work.”

Dennis Frazier commentary on the May 23, 2011 Westminster Common Council Meeting

Dennis Frazier commentary on the May 23, 2011 Westminster Common Council Meeting - May 24, 2011

The council passed some housekeeping measures - the property maintenance bill now has the height of grass as 6" the height that the city will send a notice to homeowners about cutting –the height was left off the original document.

Changing the limit to $10,000 as the amount the city can buy necessary items as needed by departments without requiring a formal written and competively bid contract-it was $7,500.

I introduced two new items:

1-change the time and date of the city elections-change the date to the 2nd Tuesday in May and the time to 7am-8pm--right now three other municipalities in Carroll have their elections on that Tuesday and if we moved ours to that date then we would be in line with most of the other towns- the time change would give voters an extra hour to vote

2-create a new tax break structure for smaller business-who have12 new employees 2500 sf of new or expanded space and pay the average county wage for a tax break from the city of 25% the first two years 20% years 3-4 and 15% years 5-6-with the same penalties as the Job Creation tax credit that we talked about last meeting--both items are being drafted for a future meeting ---tell me what you think …

Thanks for your time Dennis Frazier

For years, a team of computer scientists at two University of California campuses has been looking deeply into the nature of spam, the billions of unwanted e-mail messages generated by networks of zombie computers controlled by the rogue programs called botnets. History of Giulianova Groceria, 11 E. Main St. in Westminster, MD

December 27, 2006

Giulianova Groceria, http://www.brothersun.biz/history.html: Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Street community for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs.

Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio.

After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill.  Don't bother driving to Philadelphia, New York, or even Baltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!

THE GROGG REPORT

The Mt Airy Merry-Go-Round
The art of spinning...wheels, tops and facts'

By David Blais ........Mt Airy Councilman.

Many things in this world spin: a child’s top; a pinwheel; tires on a vehicle. But, perhaps, the best example of spin I found this week, is Bruce Curley’s spin on the position of Councilwoman Wendi Peters and myself in regard to Mt. Airy’s Emergency Operations Plan.

First, let me make it abundantly clear to Mr. Curley that Ms. Peters and I 100% support an Emergency Operations Plan that will fit our town and the surrounding community. What I did not support was the vagueness in the language of the Memorandum of Understanding presented by the Mayor. Mr. Curley points out that this is a "legal document" created and signed in advance between local government and service providers. While he is correct that it is an agreement, nothing binds the town to use those service providers, so the legal enforceability may not necessarily exist.
The Mayor presented the MOU commenting that it was important so "local businesses" could not "gouge us" in a time of emergency.

Ms. Peters commented that she found it disconcerting that the Mayor often speaks of "small town charm" but felt the need to present a document to keep our local businesses from "gouging" us in a time of emergency...  http://www.thegroggreport.com/merrygoround.htm
