By a vote of 8-1, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a long awaited decision Wednesday over the collision of free speech, common sense and decency and our right to privacy in the case of Albert Snyder v. Fred W. Phelps, Sr., and the Westboro Baptist Church.

The Supreme Court ruled against the father of Westminster native Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, whose March 10, 2006, funeral was picketed by members of the Kansas-based church. Corporal Snyder was 20 years-old when he died March 3, 2006, in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

The irony abounds that the Westboro band of graceless sociopaths have chosen over the years to disparage and heap emotional abuse on families at the funerals of the very men and women in uniform, who have died defending the right of these creeps to exercise their right to free speech.

Lorraine Marie Handzo, age 82 of Emmitsburg died Friday, February 25, 2011 at St. Catherine’s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg.

She was born August 4, 1928 in New York, the daughter of the late Stanley J. and Mae Grazenkowski Cyran.

She was the wife of the late Joseph J. Handzo, Sr. She is survived by children, Michael, Jay, Mark, Chris, Robert Handzo and Elizabeth McMahon; brother, Stanley J. Cyran and his wife, Mary Ellen; sister-in-law, Dorothy Michalek; also eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services and inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery will be private for the family. Arrangements are by the Myers-Durboraw Funeral in Emmitsburg, MD

Fred L. Dulik, 87, of Manchester, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at Long View Nursing Home in Manchester.

Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Grays Landing, Pa., he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Papay Dulik.

He was the husband of Rose Stabile Dulik, his wife of 63 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. He had been a warehouse supervisor in automobile parts for General Motors, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Salaried Retirees Club. He was a communicant of St. John Catholic Church in Westminster.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons David A. Dulik and wife Anne, of Aberdeen, and Fred Dulik and significant other Randi, of Westminster; daughter Kathleen Wiles and husband Skip, of Hampstead; and grandchildren Chris Dulik, of Havre de Grace, Justin and Kyle Dulik, both of Westminster, and Amber Dulik, of Hanover, Pa.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service, 11 a.m. Monday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead.

Dimitrios D. Sirinakis, 79, of Westminster, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at Transitions HealthCare in Sykesville.

Born July 17, 1931, in Skyros, Greece, he was the son of the late Dimitrios George and Kyparissia Efthasiou Sirinakis. He served in the Greek Navy before arriving in the United States in 1960.

He graduated from the University of Michiganwith a master's degree in electrical engineering. After working at Martin Marrietta in Hagerstown for several years, he launched his own company, Skyros Shipping Company. His first vessel was named the Margarita.

For most of the 1970s he owned and operated a number of cargo vessels out of New York, N.Y. In 1983, he closed the business and for the next 25 years, pursued various maritime projects and entrepreneurial activities, primarily in Port Isabel, Texas, until his retirement.

In 2008, he moved to Westminster to be near his family. He enjoyed playing cards, music and cooking.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Zoe Sirinakis; nephews James Sirinakis, of Crownsville, A. Harry Sirinakis, of Westminster, and John Sarris, of Greece; nieces Kyparissia Sirinakis, of Bethesda, and Amerissa Fergadis, of Woodland Hills, Calif. He was predeceased by a sister, Efrosini Sarris; and a brother, George D. Sirinakis.

A Greek Orthodox funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. Anastasios Kousoulas, of Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Frederick, officiating.

Interment will be in Westminster Cemetery.

The Supreme Court decision introduced the matter as follows:

For the past 20 years, the congregation of the Westboro Baptist Church has picketed military funerals to communicate its belief that God hates the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality, particularly in America’s military. The church’s picketing has also condemned the Catholic Church for scandals involving its clergy. Fred Phelps, who founded the church, and six Westboro Baptist parishioners (all relatives of Phelps) traveled to Maryland to picket the funeral of Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq in the line of duty. The picketing took place on public land approximately 1,000 feet from the church where the funeral was held, in accordance with guidance from local law enforcement officers. The picketers peacefully displayed their signs—stating, e.g., “Thank God for Dead Soldiers,” “Fags Doom Nations,” “America is Doomed,” “Priests Rape Boys,” and “You’re Going to Hell”—for about 30 minutes before the funeral began. 2010 STELLA AWARDS

It's time again for the annual 'Stella Awards'! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico , where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right?

That's right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head.

Here are the Stellas for this past year -- 2010:

*SEVENTH PLACE*

Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son

* SIXTH PLACE *

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles , California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

* FIFTH PLACE *

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol , Pennsylvania , who was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all have this kind of anguish.

*FOURTH PLACE*

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, garnered 4th Place in the Stella's when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the b*** by his next door neighbor's beagle - even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the b*** bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

* THIRD PLACE *

Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

What ever happened to people being responsible for their own actions?

*SECOND PLACE*

Kara Walton, of Claymont , Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000....oh, yeah, plus dental expenses. Go figure.

* FIRST PLACE *

This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down?
$1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.
