Carroll Co man taken into custody for attack with hammer - By Kevin Dayhoff March 3, 2010

Westminster - Lieutenant Andrew Winner of the Maryland State Police has said that the Carroll County man they have been searching for, after allegedly assaulting his wife last night with a hammer, has been captured in Georgia.

In an earlier press release, the accused is identified as Anthony T. Soligny, 33, of the unit-block of Grapes View Drive, New Windsor, Md. He is described as a white male, 6’2” tall, 195 lbs., with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was believed to have been operating a silver 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 quad-cab pickup truck, with Maryland tag 00V129.

Soligny was considered dangerous. Maryland State Police obtained a warrant for him after last night’s incident, charging him with attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.

In a telephone interview, Winner said that the incident “appears to be yet another domestic violence case. It’s a terrible case. Very troubling. The Maryland State Police takes these cases quite seriously.”

The victim, (whose name is being withheld by Soundtrack because she is allegedly the victim of domestic abuse,) is currently undergoing care for her injuries at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she is listed in stable condition.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police, the victim is alleged to have been assaulted by her husband with a steel and rubber hammer, which police have taken into evidence.

At about 11:30 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barracks received a 9-1-1 call from the victim, who had gone to a neighbor’s home to call police.

The Maryland State Police have reported that the responding troopers found the victim had sustained what appeared to be severe blunt force trauma injuries to her head. The victim was transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center. She was later transported by ambulance to the Shock Trauma Center.

Soligny was not at his home when troopers arrived and a lookout was issued for him, according to the release. It is not known what prompted the assault other than some type of argument between the accused and victim.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.

Thomas Sterner is a sculptor and mixed media artist who is an important element in the fabric of art in Carroll County. Over the years his installations, organic sculptures and intricately carved wooden plaques and doors have both challenged and delighted viewers.

His work reminds the viewers of the delicate connection between humankind and nature. The natural wood canvas is delicately carved and enhanced with paint. Whether the work is infused with textual references or not, the work can be interpreted on many levels. Currently he is working on a series of architectural doors such as “A is for Art” which can be seen in the lobby of the Carroll Arts Center.

Thomas, his wife Barbara and children Bella and Taj are frequent visitors and participants in the myriad of art activities that Carroll County has to offer.

Off Track Art is pleased to have Thomas Sterner as our guest artist for March and April.

Reading Horton Hatches the Egg for Dr. Seuss day http://www.thetentacle.com/ http://tinyurl.com/yhjlut8 http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=3633

March 3, 2010 Horton Hatches the Egg Kevin E. Dayhoff

Yesterday was the 107th birthday of Theodor Geisel from Springfield, MA. I say with a smile, my little crocodile, you may know him better as an early trendsetter, as the good Dr. Seuss, you may deduce, because I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. To you I’m so faithful one-hundred percent.

Yes, boys and girls, Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904. After he attended Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. He published his first children's book, “And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street,” in 1937.

However, it was his book, “The Cat in the Hat,” that really earned him a place in literary history 53 years ago. Dr. Seuss went on to publish 44 children's books, win the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, in addition to three Academy Awards, before his death in 1991.

And so it was, I say because, last Monday I celebrated his birthday early, you must know surely – with his 1940 classic “Horton Hatches the Egg.”

Please don’t complain as I attempt to explain.

The day began early for me as I found myself at William Winchester Elementary School in Westminster. I was among about a dozen local volunteers that day to help celebrate “Read Across America” day, which is celebrated every year in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

The Williams family of Westminster Maryland was also there and delighted to have had the opportunity to share a light-hearted moment with Orioles manager Dave Trembley at the first day of spring training workouts at Ed Smith Stadium in sunny Sarasota Florida.

Kenny Williams and his wife, Barbara Schildwachter Williams, and their sons, Jeremy and Jonathan, from the Greens off Royer Road in Westminster were happy to be away from the cold - and visiting the Orioles’ spring training camp.

“Yeah, I’m got tired of shoveling snow,” said Mr. Williams, a landscape contractor by trade. The temperature was hovering in the 30s at home in Westminster. “We came down here (to Sarasota) to get away from the snow and the cold,” he said with a broad smile.

Jeremy Williams, an 8th grader at West Middle School in Westminster, was excited to be at spring training. “My favorite player is Brian Roberts… He plays second base.”

Roberts, the all-star player from the Durham – Chapel Hill area of North Carolina and the other “position players will have their first day of training next Tuesday… the 23rd,” said Orioles director of public relations Monica Barlow.

After being drafted by the Orioles in 1999, Roberts was brought up to the major leagues in 2001, after playing for several of the organization’s farm teams, including a number of games in Frederick, MD in 2000.

Meanwhile Jonathan Williams, a 6th grader at West Middle, didn’t have a favorite player – he was just happy to be warm.

Barbara Williams explained, “This is our third winter trip to Sarasota. We’re big Orioles fans. We’re glad they’re here… This is our first time visiting spring training. We really enjoy Sarasota. It’s warm…”

Trembley displayed a good sense of humor as he spent several minutes signing autographs, answering questions and talking about spring training with several hundred Orioles baseball fans.

“We’re excited to be here,” said Trembley referring to the team returning to Sarasota. “We’re looking forward to good year and for right now starting a long-tern relationship with Sarasota.”

The Orioles have not trained in Sarasota since 1995.

After two rebuilding years and a 64-98 record in 2009, the Orioles are looking forward to a fresh new start to this season in their upgraded facilities that will combine the team’s minor and major league operations in one place.

In the past the two operations were several hours apart, making the coordination of pre-season difficult.

The Birds took over the training facility, at the 20-year-old, 9,000-seat Ed Smith Stadium, from the Cincinnati Reds who had moved-on to a facility in the U.S. southwest.

Workers were busy throughout the day putting the finishing touches on preparing the stadium for the first home game on March 3rd against the Tampa Bay Rays. Ticket sales have been brisk for the sixteen Orioles spring training games against 10 different opponents, said Barlow.

“We’re thrilled… Sarasota has been so welcoming. We’re glad to be here,” said Barlow as she multi-tasked corralling a large contingent of Japanese reporters and photographers who were there covering Koji Uehara, the right-handed pitcher from Osaka, Japan.

Many fans are hoping that the good crop of young players will add to the team this year as Uehara returns for his second year with the Birds to shore-up the bullpen.

There are also great hopes for the off-season moves that witnessed the Birds signing free agent third baseman Miguel Tejada, starting pitcher Kevin Millwood, first baseman Garrett Atkins and closing pitcher Mike Gonzalez, observed Barlow.

Barlow also noted that the organization is looking for good results from youngsters in the outfield, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, and Nolan Reimold; young pitchers Brad Bergesen, Jason Berken, Dave Hernandez, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman; and Matt Wieters behind the plate at the catcher position.

Meanwhile as the fans in the Maryland area are looking forward to warmer weather and the upcoming baseball season, the fans at spring practice, the coaches and the players all share Barlow’s enthusiasm that maybe, just maybe, this is the year for the Birds.

WESTMINSTER POLICE DEPARTMENT

CHIEF OF POLICE

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 26, 2010

On Monday, March 1, 2010, as part of an on-going comprehensive traffic safety initiative, the Westminster Police Department will activate red light cameras at two intersections within the City.

Red light cameras have been installed to monitor violations on eastbound and westbound MD Route 140 at Malcolm Drive (including the dual left turn lanes) as well as southbound MD Route 97 at Nursery Round (including the left turn lane). The cameras will monitor traffic twenty four hours a day.

Based on extensive research, these two intersections were approved by the Maryland State Highway Administration for the installation of cameras due to a high number of red light running violations as well as crashes that were the result of red light running.

Starting on March 1, 2010 and continuing through March 14, 2010, violators who are detected running red lights at either of these locations will receive a warning notice. Individuals who receive a warning notice during this period will not be subject to a fine or any other penalty, but simply reminded via the warning notice to correct the driving behavior that resulted in their running the red light. Beginning on March 15, 2010, violators will receive citations.

Consistent with Maryland law governing the use of red light cameras, violations are considered a civil infraction and carry a seventy five dollar fine. Citations are sent to the registered owner of the vehicle involved and the registered owner can either pay the fine or stand trial in District Court. Upon paying the fine or a conviction in court, the registered owner will not receive points on their driver’s license and their insurance company cannot raise their rates.

Red light cameras have been utilized in Maryland since 1998 and their usage has resulted in a significant decrease in not only the number of instances of red light running but in red light running related collisions as well.

Get Ready For Eight-Cent Postage

Community Reporter, February 26, 1971 http://tinyurl.com/yhla4ny

Editorial - GET READY FOR EIGHT-CENT POSTAGE - Postage Rate increases now planned for May 13, will bring into use a number of special, new postage stamps of various denominations, but the one which will first proclaim to the public that letters are going to cost more will be the Missouri Commemorative stamp, marking the 150th anniversary of that State as a member of the Union.

There will be, in all, a dozen new types of postage stamps, three kinds of stamped envelopes and three postal cards.

Additional new stamps and cards and a new aerogramme will be needed by July 1st for the new international rates which go into effect at that time.

The Missouri commemorative will carry a portion of the mural gracing the wall of the Harry S. Truman library at Independence, Missouri, and will be the first stamp to bear the designation showing the new 8-cent first-class mail rate.

It will go on sale on May 8, at Independence, Missouri, according to Post Office Department announcement, and will be available at other Post Offices throughout the country the day after, May 9.

The day is chosen because May 8 will be President Truman's 87th birthday. The theme is from the painting, "The Winning of the West," by a noted Missouri artist, Thomas Hart Benton, who will be 82 years old himself on April 15.
