Secretary of State Clinton's trip to Haiti by Greta Van Sustern

Here are some notes and thoughts about Secretary of State Clinton's trip to Haiti since I was there and saw it. What I observed may answer some of your questions:

Early Saturday morning Secretary of State Clinton flew from Andrews Air Force Base to Puerto Rico where the US Coast Guard base in Puerto Rico is part of our nation's emergency response to the crisis in Haiti. The Coast Guard base in Puerto Rico is flying C-130's from Puerto Rico to Haiti. The C130's are carrying supplies into Haiti and picking up passengers in Haiti to bring them back to Puerto Rico (eg evacuation of Americans who have been living in Haiti.)

Upon arrival in Puerto Rico, Secretary of State Clinton "hitched" a ride on a C130 to Haiti that was carrying supplies. The C 130 is a military plane which is anything but luxurious - the seats are uncomfortable, and it is incredibly loud (like the military, the Secretary wore earplugs on the flight.) She could have flown on the Secretary of State plane -- but she did not want to take up space on the tarmac from supply flights and thus elected to go on a plane (C130) that was already scheduled to fly into Haiti.

Members of the media flew ONE WAY with Secretary of State Clinton -- paying the government for seats, of course, as we always do. When making the arrangements to go to Haiti, however, the State Department informed us in the media that we could ONLY have a seat ONE WAY. We would have to figure out how to get out of Haiti ourselves.

Carroll County Times News Update: NFL Playoffs: Jets Upset Colts

NFL Playoffs: Jets Upset Colts, Vikings take care of Cowboys Posted 9:15 p.m.

San Diego – Maybe Rex Ryan already knows the score of the AFC championship game, too.

I was fortunate enough to pull this screen grab off the Carroll County Times web site minutes after the Times’ staff discovered it and minutes before they pulled it.

Off course I have never-ever made a mistake in my copy. Well, maybe not. My favorite was the time I wrote Paul of Taurus – err, um, instead of Paul of Tarsus…

Anyway, it seems that right after the Times’ staff discovered it, they decided to have some fun with it just before they pulled it.

Too funny. I happen to like folks who can roll with it. For those who are not aware, the Carroll County Times has one of the best sports departments and sports reporters in the Mid-Atlantic region… Bookmark and check it out: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/sports/

However, as good as its sports reporters are; I am not under the impression that they can see into the future. Or maybe they can?

Of course, they could always use a few more semi-colons…

The Carroll County Times does a really good job of posting news updates on their site frequently during the day. It is really smart web management on their part.

I’d love to know the rest of the story as to the news feed with the incorrect headline…

Apparently, it was also linked to a news story with the incorrect headline also. But I wasn’t quick enough to grab it.

Meanwhile we certainly hope they kept the headline copy available for next week’s Jets versus the Colts game. I sure do not want the Colts to win and would love to see the Jets do it again; as they did when they beat the Colts 29-15 on Sunday, December 27, 2009…

If you will recall, that was the game when the headline from an AP article said it all, “Caldwell pulls starters in third with 5-point lead; Jets rally for win.” http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=291227011; when “The first-year coach (Jim Caldwell) pulled Manning & Co. with a 15-10 lead and 5:36 left in the third quarter.”

The upset spoiled the chances of the Colts from having a perfect season, and ended “the Colts' pursuit of perfection and their NFL-record 23-game winning streak with a 29-15 victory that had fans serenading Lucas Oil Stadium with boos and Manning, the three-time MVP, offering support for his coach's decision.”

The “Fast Facts” in the article explained:

“Peyton Manning was removed from the lineup in the third quarter with the Colts up 15-10. The Jets then scored 19 unanswered points to snap the Colts' 23-game regular season win streak.

“The Colts had fewer than 100 rushing yards for the fourth straight game; they have failed to reach the mark in 12 of 15 games this season.

“Peyton Manning (14 for 21, 192 yards) became the fourth player in NFL history with 50,000 passing yards for his career.”

Whatever. We should have been so lucky as to have had such a disappointment here in Baltimore with the Ravens.

ExploreCarroll.com: 'Coach' Charlie Havens was a good sport, and a patriot, too by Kevin Dayhoff

'Coach' Charlie Havens was a good sport, and a patriot, too

EAGLE ARCHIVE By Kevin Dayhoff Posted http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/3805/archive/ 1/17/10

Much of the interest in Carroll County history is focused on certain dates or this or that building or road, but what makes any county truly great are its people.

I was fascinated to recently run across an old newspaper item from Aug. 7, 1999, written by Baltimore Sun writer David Greene, in which he described Laurie Walters' 100-year birthday party for her house in the historic Belle Grove area of Westminster.

This is, the party was not so much a birthday gala for the structure as it was a celebration of the people who had been associated with the house.

One of those celebrated folks mentioned was Lt. Col. Charles W. "Coach" Havens. For those who did not know Coach Havens, he wore many hats over his years in Westminster.

Havens died in May 1996 of kidney failure, according to an obituary, also in The Sun, by Fred Rasmussen.

He was a 1930 graduate of then-Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) who later returned to the school on the hill to serve as its athletic director and coach of the football, baseball, basketball and boxing, a well as an instructor in physical education and health, according to the obituary.

New year means a new city attorney in Westminster

Levan and Ruff retained to take place of longtime attorney John Walsh

By Kevin Dayhoff Posted http://www.explorecarroll.com/news/3801/attorneys/ 1/12/10 http://tinyurl.com/yeqxmcb

The new year for Westminster city government will begin with new municipal attorneys for the first time in 30 years.

At the first meeting of the Westminster mayor and Common Council for 2010, the city announced the appointment of Elissa Levan and Karen Plumer Ruff to take the place of Westminster city attorney John Walsh, who retired in December after serving for more than 30 years.

The city’s process for finding a new attorney began last November. Westminster council president Damian Halstad introduced both attorneys who were in attendance for the council meeting.

“We welcome them and look forward to a long relationship because we sure don't like interviewing lawyers,” he quipped. “The last one we kept for what, 30 years?”

Levan and Karen Plumer Ruff are both from Funk & Bolton, P.A., a Mid-Atlantic-based law firm practicing primarily in commercial litigation, insurance regulation, government relations, local government law and creditors' rights.

Investigative Voice: Marylanders apply for unemployment benefits in record numbers

JOBLESS — Marylanders apply for unemployment benefits in record numbers

43.5 PERCENT SURGE OVER 2008 By Stephen Janis

Marylanders seeking unemployment benefits from the state applied in record numbers in December, state officials said this week.

Even as the national economy begins a faltering recovery, the number of Marylanders applying for unemployment benefits surged at the end of 2009 to more than 48,000 — the highest number since 1974 — according to Bernie Kohn, spokesman for the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, the agency that administers the state’s unemployment insurance fund.

“We had more claims in the month of December than any month since 1974,” Kohn said.

The December surge caps a year (2009) when roughly 416,000 Marylanders applied for unemployment benefits, a 28 percent increase over the same period the previous year (2008) when roughly 290,000 state residents applied. The surge comes as the state prepares to tap $125 million in federal aid to keep the fund solvent through April.

The total 2009 increase in applications represents a 43.5 percent surge over figures for calendar year 2008.

A Message from the Governor

A Message from the Governor

January 13, 2010

427th Legislative Session

Today, the 427th Maryland General Assembly convened for its 90-day legislative session.

Our task as public servants, as Marylanders, and as Americans is to continue making the choices and connections that will allow our families to get through these tough times even stronger. As I know you'll agree, there is no government program that is as important and empowering as a job that allows a family to raise their kids with dignity and respect and a roof over their heads. In these tough times, everything we accomplish this legislative session must be seen through the lens of whether or not it creates jobs, protects jobs, or improves the environment for creating and protecting jobs.

And it begins with maintaining the era of fiscal responsibility we returned to Annapolis. Rather than increasing spending, for the first time since the Great Depression, spending levels are less today than they were four years ago – and state spending has reduced $4.6 billion under our Administration. Maryland remains one of only seven states that continue to defend a Triple A Bond rating – a measure of fiscal responsibility certified by all three major agencies.

Every year for the past three years, we've submitted a budget that is not only balanced, but that comes in within the spending affordability guidelines. It is all with the goal and the motive and purpose of maintaining fiscal responsibility so we can make progress on schools, progress on public safety, progress that strengthens and grows our middle class and creates more opportunity for hardworking people in our State

Martin O'Malley

The Tentacle : Spontaneous Incompetence by Kevin E. Dayhoff January 13, 2010

In an incident, almost totally ignored by the dominant United States major news media, comes word that an American hero, the renown Army Green Beret-turned-Iraq/Afghanistan war correspondent, Michael Yon, was “arrested” January 5 as he entered the country for failing to disclose his income.

No, as unbelievable as it may seem, I am not making this up.

The news comes barely 10 days after a 23-year-old Nigerian named Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was essentially given a pass by authorities to fly about the country, as a result of bureaucratic bungling of byzantine proportions, with a bomb in his pants which he planned to kill nearly 300 airplane passengers on Christmas Day.

It is in this context that Mr. Yon, the award-winning American combat-journalist, wrote on his Facebook page at 11:05 A.M. January 5:

“Got arrested at the Seattle airport for refusing to say how much money I make... Their videos and audios should show that I was polite, but simply refused questions that had nothing to do with national security….”

[…]

According to Aleksandra Kulczuga, writing for the web publication, The Daily Caller, [http://dailycaller.com/] Mr. Yon said: “I was caught off-guard by the question [about my income]…” Yon, an American citizen traveling on an American passport, said he cooperated fully when asked standard security questions about what was in his suitcase: “I was on better-than-normal behavior.”

[…]

For those who are not familiar with Mr. Yon, there is no better place to start than with his web publication, “Michael Yon Online Magazine,” http://www.michaelyon-online.com/...

Annapolis diverts sister city funding

Annapolis Mayor Cohen Diverts Sister City Funding to Reduce Budget Deficit

Annapolis, MD (01-12-10) – As part of his continuing effort to attack the city's financial deficit, Mayor Joshua J. Cohen announced today that he is redirecting the $27,500 remaining in the Sister Cities program to the general fund for the current fiscal year.

"Now is not the time to be spending $27,500 on the Sister Cities program when we are struggling even to fund essential services," said Mayor Cohen, whose administration is focused on eliminating an estimated $6.5 million budget deficit for FY 2011.

The Mayor also is convening a group of community stakeholders to review the Sister Cities program and recommend ways to explore public/private partnerships that would provide long-term benefit to the city.

"A strategically thought-out international exchange program has the potential to add value to our economic development efforts, as well as our educational and cultural institutions within the city," Mayor Cohen said. "It is time to take the Sister Cities program out from under the umbrella of city government and make it a more community-based initiative."

Individuals who have accepted the Mayor's invitation to review the Sister Cities program and make recommendations include:

Linnell Bowen, Executive Director, Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts
Reginald Broddie, Chief Professional Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County
Bob Burdon, President and CEO, Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce
Connie Del Signore, President and CEO, Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference & Visitors Bureau
Kevin Maxwell, Superintendent, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Joe Rubino, Director of Governmental Affairs, U.S. Naval Academy

Annapolis first began as a Sister City in 1980, partnering with Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada. Since then, Annapolis has partnered with many other cities, including Wexford, Ireland; Dumfries, Scotland; Tallin, Estonia; Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Rochefort, France; Richmond, North Yorkshire; and Newport, Wales.

To My Darling Husband, I had a small accident with your pickup

--To My Darling Husband,

Before you return from your business trip, I just want you to know about the small accident I had with the pickup truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me.

I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pickup fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car.

I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart.

I am enclosing a picture for you. I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again.

Your loving wife.
XOXOXOXOXO

P.S. Your Girlfriend Called.

The Chick-Fil-A in Westminster is quite supportive of the community. We go out of our way to eat there to support both the restaurant's values and the fact that they support the community from which they are benefiting.
