Carrots, eggs, and coffee

She Tells Her Grandma That She’s Just Been Cheated On So Grandma Tells Her To Do This

May 26, 2016 Presser Staff Editor Buzzworthy

This is a good lesson for all of us, no matter what stage of life you’re in. You’ll see what I mean.

A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her – her husband had cheated on her and she was devastated. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as soon as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, ‘Tell me what you see.’

‘Carrots, eggs, and coffee,’ she replied.

Her grandmother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The grandmother then asked the granddaughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg.

Finally, the grandmother asked the granddaughter to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked, ‘What does it mean, grandmother?’

Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

“Which are you?” she asked her granddaughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity? Do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship, or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain.. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level?

How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

May we all be like the COFFEE?

Share this with your friends and family today.

Westminster Fallfest September 22-25, 2022

Westminster Fallfest started in 1978 to promote awareness of the renewal of the downtown shopping district. The dates for this year’s Westminster Fallfest are Sept. 22-25, 2022.

Kevin Dayhoff: It’s fall and time for community events in Westminster, Carroll County Sep 23, 2022 at 9:00 am

This year in Carroll County, fall began at 8:03 p.m. on Sept. 22. Scientifically it’s the autumnal equinox, the time when the sun shines directly on the equator, and the southern and northern hemispheres receive the same amount of sunlight. After the 22nd, the northern hemisphere began to tilt away from the sun.

[…]

For those of us who love summer, the first day of fall can only mean that winter will soon be upon us. Others look upon the fall season with excitement. Indeed, in Carroll County fall brings about a cornucopia of community events. Fall is for apples, pumpkins, sweaters, fuzzy socks, and colorful leaves.

Let’s look at three of the events on the calendar for fall. The 43rd annual Westminster Fallfest will be held from Sept. 22-25 at the Westminster playground at 11 Longwell Ave. On Sept. 24, the Miss Carroll County Scholarship Competition will take place at Westminster High School. The start of October will be celebrated at Oktoberfest at the Carroll County Agricultural Center on Oct. 1 and 2.

Westminster Fallfest started in 1978 to promote awareness of the renewal of the downtown shopping district. The dates for this year’s Westminster Fallfest are Sept. 22-25, 2022.

According to information provided by the City of Westminster, this year’s Fallfest charity partners are, Crossroads Church, Catholic Charities Head Start & Early Learning, Westminster Municipal Band, and Together We Own It. “Selected partners will assist with planning ... complete tasks delegated by organizers, provide and coordinate volunteers to manage and staff several activities during the four-day festival, and attend mandatory monthly meetings. In return, each partner receives a portion of the proceeds generated from the event to benefit their organization.

“Fallfest is a four-day community event with fun for everyone! The festival is [composed] of rides, games, food, entertainment, and on Saturday and Sunday only, an assortment of craft, commercial, and nonprofit vendors. Hundreds of volunteers from local organizations and area schools help staff this event.”

Kevin Dayhoff: In July 1845 Westminster held a funeral for President Jackson

Kevin Dayhoff: In July 1845 Westminster held a funeral for President Jackson Jul 24, 2022

On July 19, 1845, Westminster paused with great fanfare to mourn the death of President Andrew Jackson, who served in office from 1829 to 1837.

For a historian, it is always fascinating to research and write about Jackson. His legacy is so complicated. Historians either love him or hate him. There seems to be no middle ground. According to my research at the State Library of North Carolina, conducted when I participated in the civil rights movement in the early 1970s, Jackson “was born … near the border between North and South Carolina on March 15, 1767. [He] was the third child and third son of Scots-Irish parents. His father, also named Andrew, died as the result of a logging accident just a few weeks before the future president was born.
