Time Flies Dayhoff: America's oldest banker when he died, John Cunningham enjoyed walking, cycling and poker

Time Flies Dayhoff: America's oldest banker when he died, John Cunningham enjoyed walking, cycling and poker

January 11, 2019 by Kevin Dayhoff

As we put away another year and look forward to a new one, it is only fitting that we remember one of the many great Carroll Countians that have gone before us: John H. Cunningham.

On Dec. 31, 1965, John Cunningham passed away within a few hours of his 99th birthday. Local historian Jay Graybeal wrote of “his rich life, including his interests in bicycling, walking and poker,” in a March 16, 1997 column in the Carroll County Times.

[…]

Cunningham was born on New Year’s Day in 1867. According to his obit, “On January 1, 1885, while a senior at Western Maryland College, Mr. Cunningham began his banking career as a clerk with the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank, [at 105 E. Main St. in Westminster] following the footsteps of his father William, who was a clerk there.”

He worked in the same office, with the same employer for his entire life — from 1885 until when he passed away in 1965. “Many days he walked the mile to work from his home at 95 West Green Street.”

Slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona

Slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona

Wow – so sad: “… but authorities say Limbaugh walked up to a traffic accident that Corona was called to and started shooting at her patrol car, a fire truck and a minivan…”

I guess this reinforces our training about safety perimeters. According to ODMP: “As Officer Corona was conducting an investigation at the collision scene a person not involved with the crashed rode up to the scene on a bicycle. As Officer Corona spoke to one of the persons involved in the crash the man then walked up to her and opened fire without warning, striking her. He shot her several more times after she fell to the ground before shooting randomly at others bystanders and vehicles…”

The story behind this image of slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona

DAVIS, Calif. (KTVU) - In the image, she's wearing a royal blue gown, carrying a black-striped American flag with a thin blue line streaked across it.

[…]

It's this compelling photograph of slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona that circulated throughout the country on Friday, hours after the 22-year-old was shot to death by a suspect identified on Saturday as Kevin Douglas Limbaugh, 48.

[…]

"I would like this photograph to serve as my gratitude for all those law enforcement men and women who have served, who are currently serving, and those who have died in the line of duty protecting our liberties in this great country," Corona wrote on her Facebook page on Oct. 21, 2016. She used the hashtags: #LawEnforcement #Blueline #Thankyou #Lausphotography.

[…]

Corona's father, Jose Merced Corona, spent 26 years as a Colusa County Sheriff's sergeant before retiring and getting elected to the county's Board of Supervisors last November. Her mother is a first-grade teacher, and two cousins are also in law enforcement, Gomez said.

[…]

She grew up in a tight-knit family in the Northern California town of Arbuckle. The family had emigrated from Mexico a few generations ago and had become established members of their community.

Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster, Md.

Caroline, Grammy, and I are on the altar guild at Grace Lutheran Church. Last Friday, 11Jan2019, The Altar Guild chair Cynthia Beckhardt, Caroline, and I changed-out the paraments at church. We changed the liturgical hangings for the altar, lectern, and pulpit. I really liked the views of the sanctuary after we turned-out the lights and took a few pictures. http://gracelc.org/

Grace Weekly 1/3/2019

Worship this Weekend
January 5 & 6
Epiphany means “manifestation.” On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to all nations. Along with the magi, we kneel at Jesus’ feet. We give the gift of our praise, but God’s gift to us is the great epiphany of God’s grace and mercy. Renewed in worship, we go forth to witness to the light that shines brightly in our midst.
Please join us for worship:
Saturday at 5:00 pm
Sunday at 7:45 am, 9:00 am,
and 11:15 am

Christian Education for all ages at 10:15 am
Celebration of Epiphany and
Burning of the Greens
Sunday, January 6
3:00 p.m.
At the Hirt Tree Farm
917 Arnold Rd, Westminster
Join us for a unique experience of sharing the light of Christ as we celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord. On this day we rejoice with the Wise Men that God’s gift of love is extended to people of all nations. In our worship and fellowship we will celebrate the depth of God’s grace in our lives.

Bring a live tree to be burned, if you have one. If not, join us anyway. Most of the festivities will be inside a warm building. There is not far to walk from the parking into the building.

This is an event for people of all ages!
Christmas 2018
Grace Lutheran Church made a significant impact on our community during the Christmas season. Here are the highlights of how we made a difference:

  • Table of Grace served meals on Christmas Day and New Years Day – Gift bags of helpful items were given to our neighbors

  • Our teens sponsored a basketball tournament raising $550 to give gifts to children in foster care. This event was supported by Thrivent Financial.

  • Our confirmation class, with the help of Thrivent Financial, supported a local family with Christmas gifts for two boys and their mom

  • Thirteen families received boxes of food and a Wal-Mart gift card

  • Boy Scout Troop 393 gave a large box of hats, gloves, and socks to the Cold Weather Shelter

  • Little Friends of Grace shared children’s hats, gloves and scarves with the Shepherd’s Staff

  • Women of the ELCA prepared 39 gift boxes for Seafarers stopping in the Port of Baltimore

  • Sixty-seven boxes were sent to Operation Christmas Child
