Breaking Up Christmas!
Half a century ago, people in the mountains of the North Carolina and Southwest Virginia celebrated Christmas quite differently than the way most of us do now, holding two weeks of informal house parties that were filled with old time fiddle music, song and dance - a tradition they called "Breaking Up Christmas."  These Christmas parties ran through and ended with Old Christmas, January 6th.  Walt Michael & Company will "break up Christmas" with you this evening as they share their wide-ranging repertoire of tunes and songs that reflect the rich musical heritage of the Appalachians.  The traditional folk musics of Scotland, Ireland, England and Africa made their way into the remote mountain hollers, later emerging as an integrated American musical genre that continues to evolve. Traditional string band music is passed down from generation to generation., from singer to singer, from musician to musician.  In this great oral tradition, songs and tunes are evaluated and winnowed by time.  Memorable melodies and lyrics that withstand this test of time take their place among the venerable repertoire.  Welcome to an evening of old time music.  Let the season begin!

Considered to be a virtuoso of tremendous influence in the revival of the hammered dulcimer, Walt's wide repertoire ranges from old-time Southern Appalachian, to Celtic, to folk, to breath-taking original compositions.  His various musical incarnations, including Bottle Hill, Michael, McCreesh & Campbell and Walt Michael & Co. have spanned over 35 years and taken him from the coal camps of Appalachia to the Closing Ceremonies of the 13th Olympic Winter Games in 1980, when 900 million world viewers heard his signature composition, Snowblind.  As a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist he has recorded sixteen albums and instructional videos, appeared at the White House, the Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center and toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Europe and the UK.  His music has been heard on ABC-TV, NBC's Tonight Show, Broadway, BBC, TNN, CBC, OLN and PBS.   Walt is the Artist in Residence at McDaniel College, as well as Founder and Executive Director of Common Ground on the Hill.

Westminster teen takes creative approach to helps restart veterans' lives

Westminster teen takes creative approach to helps restart veterans' lives

Westminster High School student Madeline White, 16, was fairly far from home Nov. 11, attending an event in Baltimore on Veterans Day.
But she was there, among some 300 attendees, sharing a view of "home" that could help homeless veterans across the state.
The event was "re-StART with Art," an art auction and gala at Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore to benefit Baltimore Station — a residential recovery program treats men, mostly war veterans, who battle homelessness, substance abuse and lack of job skills.
White was among many students throughout the region — most members of their schools' National Art Honor Society chapters — who contributed paintings and photos, as well as specially painted doors that symbolized doors to recovery for the homeless and addicted men.

PopUp Art at 7 East” exhibit in the storefront windows at 7 E. Main Street has ended.  But that doesn’t mean the art is gone!  Off Track Art is still showing works at our regular gallery space across the way, at Liberty Street and Main, through the purple door withCarousel Stained Glass.  Do you like seeing “Pop-Up Art” spaces?  OTA is looking for another empty storefront to fill with art to encourage revitalization of our downtown area.
Off Track Art artists at Room For Friends:  OTA’s Kevin Dayhoff is the featured artist showing through end of June.  Then in July see OTA’s Mary Decker’s work during July-August.  Please visit their web site at www.roomforfriends.com or www.facebook.com/roomforfriendswestminster or call 443-474-8514.  The opening receptions coincide with those of Off Track Art every other month, so park once and stop by both venues!   (Check reception calendar dates above.)
Mary Decker is showing her art on July 16 & 17 at First Floor Arts in Greetings & Readings in the Hunt Valley Towne Centre. Greetings & Readings is an upscale gift, book and card store that also has a small café.  Formerly located at the corner of Loch Raven Blvd. and Goucher Blvd. for many years, it has moved to Hunt Valley Towne Centre.
Mary’s wonderful floral art can also be seen the South Carroll Fine Arts League exhibition at Fairhaven, June 1 thru July 15, Sykesville, MD... and...
Kevin Dayhoff, too, is represented in the South Carroll Fine Arts League exhibition at Fairhaven, June 1 thru July 15, Sykesville, MD; it is open to the public with approximately 50 paintings and photographs, original oil, watercolor or acrylic paintings available for sale. In addition, prints (framed or unframed) may be available by contacting the artists.
Linda Van Hart spent some of her springtime in creativity abroad, collecting plant specimens from throughout Europe and creating patterns along the way to inspire new botanical designs.  Her drawings and photos of alpacas and llamas will be used in a business card design, on T shirts and a banner, as an entire identity package for a Swiss business, Lamahof.
Linda is also teaching “Sculpting Natural Forms,” and has organized a full day for metalsmiths, blacksmiths and bead freaks.  Check out the site and register for www.commongroundonthehill.org.  Great opportunities to study with national and international masters of art and craft, vocal and instrumental musicians, dancers, poets and writers, July 3-15.  The Roots Music and Arts Festis July 9-10, tickets available.  Don't miss out on this fun local event.
IN the GALLERY at OTA:
Original painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, photography, cut-paper, book art, sculpture, jewelry.
NEW WORK:  Visit Off Track Art and catch them in the act...
Gail Elwell has begun THE THREE HOUR PROJECT:  Is it possible to create a piece of art in three hours?  Gail thinks so.  “I enjoy making art in the gallery.  I think ‘Made Here’ art plays an important part in a successful cooperative art gallery.  However, it would be impracticable to transport work the will take months to complete.  So.... a new exploration is born:  ‘THE THREE HOUR PROJECT,’ to be created during the three hours I sit the gallery, a small collage out of five new, uncut sources.  Fresh images to look at, new connections to make, new books to cut up!  An opportunity to take chances, sharpen design skills, and revel in the pleasure of art play!  “I KNOW” AND “ALMOST” starts the series. They were taken from Horizon magazines spanning 1964 & 65.  I plan on creating two a month, so visit the gallery often.”
Bob Waddell is continuing with the mixed media "Aviary" series and another series that is only sketchbook worthy at this time which involves weaving together different but related images in what he’s referring to as "Aerial Views with
an elevation twist."  He’ll be busy with these on-going works while at the coop during the rest of May and June.  Gallery visitors are welcome to stop by and see work in progress.
Mary Decker is working on new watercolor flower portraits.  Also, after inspiration from a trip to the American Visionary Arts Museum and an art challenge from fellow artists Mary be working on a self-portrait done in the tone of the AVAM.
Our Mid-year reinstallation happens this summer, so June is your last chance to see what’s been in the gallery.  And July will show new works and new arrangements with many fresh-made works. (pictured:  new work by C.Sawdey)
Also find:  decorated journals & boxes, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, greeting cards, scarves.
OTA Says Farewell:
Pam Zappardino, who is leaving Off Track Art end of June, will be sorely missed by those who know the enormity of her contributions.  Pam had been an integral part at launching the artists’ cooperative gallery that became Off Track Art.  She offered much expertise as well as many ideas and talents toward the establishment and success of this group.  As we wish her all the best on her departure, we also look forward to seeing Pam continue her creative output, her paintings, photography, and her writings in other outlets.

Memorial to veterans took root under Mather's care

Memorial to veterans took root under Mather's care

11/09/05 By Kevin E. Dayhoff This Friday, Nov. 11 is Veteran's Day.

Many will have the day off - hopefully it will be a day spent with family and friends and time will be set aside to reflect upon the meaning of the day.

Veteran's Day is a day of commemoration and honor set aside so that we may celebrate the freedoms that we enjoy, and the preservation of American values made possible by dedication and sacrifice of United States' citizen-soldiers.

Historically, Nov. 11 (1918) was the official end of "The Great War" (World War I) at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Many veterans we remember on Veteran's Day are no longer with us in person, but remain in our hearts and are with us in spirit.

The 2000 Census data indicates there are 26.4 million Americans who are veterans. The highest percentage was from the Vietnam era. In 2000 there were 524,230 veterans in Maryland - 13.4 percent of the population.

Often, when I pass through the intersection of Malcolm Drive and Old Westminster Pike, I notice a small sign facing the road in the little piece of ground that serves as a front yard for the house on the corner.

Growing up we knew the property as the "Mary Malcolm Hunter" property (hence "Malcolm Drive"). The sign commemorates Jerome L. Day of Gamber, who was the first Carroll Countian to make the supreme sacrifice for our country in World War I.

A fading, yellowed, undated news clipping in my "Trees Ð Environmentalism" file tells the story of Mrs. George K. Mather of 121 Willis Street in Westminster being "honored by [the] Jerome L. Day Post 48 of the 29th Division Association Saturday night at the VFW home. Commander Harold Roop presided."

Fortunately, on the back of the undated clipping is a Carroll Theatre advertisement for "Boy, Did I Get A Wrong Number" starring Bob Hope, Elke Sommer and Phyllis Diller. This movie came out in 1966.

(Boy, does that bring back memories? Bob Hope is a real estate agent. Phyllis Diller is his zany maid and Elke Sommer is a beautiful film star who has run away from the film studio, for reasons only a wacky slapstick comedy can dream up, and hides in Bob Hope's house.)

In the 1966 ceremonies, Mrs. Mather "was recognized as the originator of the planting of one mile of Memorial Trees for the boys of World War 1."

Those trees were reported to be the first Memorial Trees planted in the United States for World War 1.

In 1919, Mrs. Mather was the president of the "Civic League of Westminster." She felt that there ought to be a "lasting memorial" to the Carroll Countians who served in World War I.

My grandfather, William Earl Wright of Taylorsville, served in WWI as a blacksmith, and I'd like to think those trees help commemorate his service.

Mrs. Mather got assistance from former Maryland Governor Edwin Warfield (1904-1908) and George Mathews, who later served as the Mayor of Westminster from May 17, 1926 to March 15, 1938, when he died in office.

Mather appointed Mrs. S. Luther Bare, Mrs. Daniel Shipley and Mrs. Austin Gallagher to a committee that oversaw the planting of 100 pin oaks, which lined both sides of Old Baltimore Pike.

The trees were dedicated at "devotional exercises" on July 4, 1919.

Hopefully you will spend part of Veteran's Day with friends and family, and take time to reflect upon the meaning of the day.

Happy Veteran's Day.

For all our readers who are veterans, please accept a grateful nation's heartfelt gratitude for your service to preserve our American values.
