Carroll Magazine Union Bridge: The Little Town That Could Apr 1, 2005 Written By Leslie Eckard
Ms. Leslie Eckard just called to my attention an article she
had written on Union Bridge for Carroll Magazine in 2005.
I have just filed a story on Union Bridge and the Western
Maryland Railway – and the railway museum in Union Bridge. I had dinner at the “Original
Pizza” and posted some pictures on Facebook…
Posted By CM on Apr 1, 2005
Written By Leslie Eckard
Be sure to read the entire article here: http://carrollmagazine.com/union-bridge-the-little-town-that-could/
Highlights:
Community spirit and innovation run like parallel train
tracks in Union Bridge. The area is a study in contrasts: a hard scrabble land
of rock and swamp that inspires works of art; a town poised for a growth spurt
while holding on fiercely to its heritage.
Located on the Piedmont Plateau in western Carroll County,
Union Bridge has retained its population (approximately 1,000) and small-town
feel for generations. With its one stoplight and absence of fast-food
restaurants, coffee bars, and strip malls–it is a throwback to a simpler time…
[…]
Other improvements included the establishment of Little Pipe
Creek Park, a wetlands preserve complete with a bicycle and walking trail…
[…]
Union Bridge has a long-standing tradition of community
spirit. In 1820, early descendants of the original settler, William Farquhar,
worked together to build a bridge that would span the swamp and join their
lands together.
[…]
Between 1855 and 1862, with the coming of the Western
Maryland Railroad, the population of the town exploded…
[…]
Another Union Bridge “import” and fan is Angelo Monteleone,
whose restaurant, Original Pizza, is a must-see…

“Original Pizza” is bright, clean, and well maintained. It
has all manner of great Union Bridge history memorabilia, pictures, artifacts,
and mementos. It is like eating at a museum cafeteria.
It sits across the intersection from the sculpture at the
corner of North Main Street and East Broadway, which is a reproduction of “Love
Reconciled with Death” by Union Bridge native William Henry Rinehart
(1825-1874.)
Stop by and tell them Mayor Perry Jones’ Uncle Kevin sent

It was fifty years ago when the Shaffer & Co. Variety
Store, a Westminster institution close to the hearts of many children in town,
closed.
After the recent two-part series ran in the Eagle Archives
on the Westminster Post Office building, at the corner of Main Street and
Longwell Avenue, a number of readers were in touch with many questions.
Several asked about the two building that once stood to the
east of the post office in what is now a parking lot.
A January 13, 1966 newspaper clipping provided by local
historian George Welty, tells part of the story. “… the Stonesifer building
(was) being demolished last week to make way for Post Office enlargement...”
A second picture was identified: “These two buildings
located on East Main Street next to the Post Office were completely demolished
last week… The store … located in the corner building will long be remembered
as Schaffer’s store. Jessie Myers having done business there for many years.”
Post Office took shape through rain, sleet, bankruptcy,
deaths

Kevin Dayhoff, September 3, 2011 | 6:44 p.m.
Last week we discussed the incarnations of the Westminster
Post Office — but there are more stories to tell. In 1934, folks began to
wonder if the "new" post office at the corner of Longwell Avenue and
East Main Street would ever be finished.
Of course, the present post office is on Woodward Road, but
here's the story of that classic 1934 office (now home to Kohn Publishing) in
the downtown area:
"The old story that 'good things come to those who
wait' is true, for travel where you will, a finer and more beautiful post
office building will not be found…," according to an old newspaper
clipping from Aug. 24, 1934.
+++++++
The two buildings in this photograph, the Stonesifer
building and the Shaffer & Co. Variety Store, were torn down in the first
week of January 1966 to make way for the expansion of the parking lot for the
1934 post office building at the corner of East Main Street and Longwell
Avenue. Harry W. and Arline Myers Shaffer founded the business in 1911 as a
general merchandise store. Arline’s brother Jesse later joined the business
after WWI. When Mr. Shaffer died in 1941, his widow Arline and their daughter continued
in the business along with Jesse Myers – who was later helped by his son,
Howard Myers. The store closed in January 1961. Original photo by Kevin E.
Dayhoff published by the Democratic Advocate Jan. 13, 1966.

Peg Benson Shilling of Westminster, 89
Peg Benson Shilling
of Westminster, 89
A memorial service for Peg Benson Shilling of Westminster,
89; will be held at St Benjamin's Lutheran Church, 700 Krider's Cemetery Rd,
Westminster, MD on December 12th, 2015 at 11 AM. http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2015/12/peg-benson-shilling-of-westminster-89.html
R. Margaret Benson of Westminster, peacefully departed this
life at age 89 on November 14th, 2015 in Tacoma, WA.
Loved and respected by all who knew her, Peg was a shining
example of love, grace, and poise. Her passion in life was best expressed
through her faith, love and unending devotion to her three husbands, their
children, grand-children, and great grand-children. Be it her biological-family
or family-by-marriage, she treated one and all, as her own.
Peg was born Ruth Margaret Benson in Westminster, MD on
March 15th, 1926, to her parents Raymond and Grace Hosfeld Benson.
Peg married her first-love, Thomas E. Shilling of
Westminster, MD on December 23rd, 1946. Peg was predeceased by her 1st husband
and is survived by their four sons: Thomas Shilling of Marblehead, MA; Mark
Shilling of Saylorsburg, PA; Kinsey Shilling of Mount Vernon, WA; and Brian
Shilling of Tacoma, WA.
Peg's 2nd marriage to Paul T. Smock of Wayne, NJ occurred on
July 28, 1973. She was predeceased by her 2nd husband and her step-daughter, Karen
Smock of Austin, TX. She is survived through her 2nd marriage by four
step-children: Kristen Ogwaro of Moulton AL; Paul and Katherine Smock of Elk
Grove, CA; and Parker Smock of Binghamton NY.
Peg was also predeceased by her 3rd husband, Ronald S. Jamieson
of Greensboro, NC. She is survived through her 3rd marriage by her four
step-children: Ronald Jamieson of Waynesville, NC; Jim Jamieson of Orange, CA;
Karen Ipek of Norcross GA; and Meredith Renz of Greensboro, NC.
To name all of Peg's son and daughter-in-laws,
grand-children and great grand-children would fill a small book. And those
touched by her love-filled life are truly never-ending.
Peg attended Westminster Elementary and High Schools,
graduating in 1943. She was a 1947 graduate of Hood College, Frederick, MD,
majoring in Biology.
Peg trained in nursing at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore,
MD. She was an Administrative Assistant to the Departments of OBGYN and
Pediatrics at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, MD.
Since retiring, she had more time for gardening, family, and
friends. Her love of flowers, especially roses, kept her occupied three seasons
of the year. Being a watcher of feathered friends (i.e. song birds) brought her
much joy year round.
A memorial service will be held at St Benjamin's Lutheran
Church, 700 Krider's Cemetery Rd, Westminster, MD on December 12th, 2015 at 11
AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity
of one's choosing. We all will miss her tremendously, and know she is in a
better place.

Enjoy Diana Scott’s 2014 presentation when she spoke in Sykesville about her
new book The Forgotten Corner: A History of Oakland Mills.
Westminster, MD - The Historical Society of Carroll County
is pleased to announce that The Forgotten Corner: A History of Oakland Mill by
Diana Scott - one of its best-selling titles - is now available again.
The book has been out of print for several years but now,
thanks to a generous donation by Diana and her husband, Charles, the book is
being updated and re-printed.
Based on years of research, the book tells the fascinating
story of a Carroll County community lost to the waters of Liberty Reservoir. From
early settlement to the growth of a textile mill on the bank of the Patapsco
River, it examines the lives of those who worked in and around the Oakland
Manufacturing Company.
Oral histories with some of the last residents offer a
moving account of life in the town and the experience of watching their
community disappear. The new edition includes information not found in the
original.
The book will be after available November 11 in the Shop at
Cockey’s. The price is $22.00 plus tax. Historical Society members receive a
10% discount. The Shop is located at 216 East Main Street in Westminster. The
Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Mrs. Scott presented an illustrated lecture on the history
of Oakland Mill at the Historical Society’s Box Lunch Talk on November 11, 2015
at Grace Hall, Grace Lutheran Church, Carroll Street, Westminster.
The Box Lunch Talks begin at noon and last about an hour.
Bring your lunch – the Society provides beverages and desserts. Admission is
$3.00 for Society members and $7.00 for non-members. Books will be available
for purchase.
