Union Bridge Pilot, August 19, 1921: Several miscreants overstepped the limits of practical jokes

Several miscreants overstepped the limits of practical jokes

Union Bridge Pilot, August 19, 1921.

Several miscreants, evidently unacquainted with the law, overstepped the limits of all practical jokes a few nights ago when beginning at the railroad the crossing gates were left down, continuing through town and carrying porch furniture and house flowers from porches and, in some cases, breaking them, and committing numerous other pranks.

It appears there is a dark cloud of suspicion resting over the heads of several of the perpetrators so that a repetition of these acts might result in bringing them face to face with the law.

Union Bridge Pilot, August 19, 1921.

In a way, I’ve been working on this week’s cover story–which sadly resides behind the Time paywall–for the past five years, as I’ve embedded with our troops downrange. Watching them in the field, I’ve noticed that they’ve had to learn some new and unusual skills–skills that are extremely well-suited for public service. We hear a [...]

Presidential campaigns are all about the future, yet they take place in the present and rest upon the past. A candidate’s record, and performance in debates and on the trail, are what a voter has to go on. So the records of the Republican candidates when it comes to fiscal responsibility matter, especially in a [...]

In the latest issue of TIME, now available to subscribers on tablets and the web, Republican John E. Sununu argues the debt debate and subsequent S&P downgrade have critically damaged President Obama’s re-election effort, while Mark Halperin makes the case that Rick Perry’s entrance into the presidential race has things looking up for the White [...]

I was flattered to learn from Joe Klein’s Aug. 15 column in TIME that Barack Obama is reading my book Nixonland. The book is about the “separate and irreconcilable fears” over the past 50 years that came to define the increasingly acrimonious cohabitation of Americans on the left and on the right. I assume Obama [...]

On Sunday in Memphis, Tavis Smiley, the talk-show host, and Cornel West, the Princeton professor, closed a 16-city bus tour intended to draw attention to some of the rarely discussed aspects of the economic crisis: The poverty rate is 14.3%, the highest since the mid-1990s. A record 45.8 million people receive food stamps. “Poverty and [...]

Vo Tech School To Open

Democratic Advocate August 16, 1971

Vo Tech School To Open - Despite past delays, the Carroll County Vocational Technical Center will open its doors on schedule September 7 for the first year operation of the new program, a school official said this week.

Frank Mather, administrator of the center, said that all of the school's facilities except for the horticulture area, conference rooms and some lavatories and some equipment will be ready for use on opening day.

Earlier reports indicated the vocational school might not be able to open on time.

"Enough of the school is ready to provide the children with a full day's program," Mather said. No doubt it will present problems," Mather added, "but it's a lot better than leaving the student with a half-day with nothing to do."

The administrator said that in the past few weeks the contractor had put many more men on the job and work was "really moving now."

Democratic Advocate, August 16, 1946: Westminster Riding Club holds horse show

Westminster Riding Club holds horse show

Democratic Advocate, August 16, 1946.

Horse Show Big Attraction — 76 Horses and Ponies Compete; Largest Attendance In History; Teeter Cup To Chas. Rider - The twelfth annual horse and pony show, held Sunday at the Westminster Riding Club, drew a large attendance.

There were 76 ponies and horses shown on the picturesque show grounds, claimed to be one of the most attractive in the state. The show got off to a start before 10 o'clock and under the supervision of the horse show secretary, William Robinette, the events moved along smoothly and in good time.

The show closed after 7 p.m. with the majority of the patrons remaining until the last class contest was completed. One of the features of the show was the presentation of the John S. Teeter Memorial Cup in the open jumping class by the late horseman's widow, who was escorted into the ring to witness the contest and to make the presentation, by the president of the club, Dr. L. N. Hitchcock.

The late Mr. Teeter was a horse show enthusiast and patronized many of the shows throughout the seasons with his string of winners. His sons were admired for their horsemanship. First leg on the memorial cup went to Charles Ryder, owner and rider of Big Boy.

The Carroll Record August 16, 1973: Tractor Pull Claims Fair's Biggest Draw

Tractor Pull Claims Fair's Biggest Draw

The Carroll Record, August 16, 1973.

Tractor Pull Claims Fair's Biggest Draw—Of all the events at the 4-H and FFA Fair, the biggest crowd drawer was the tractor pulling contest.

Some of the most powerful tractors and best drivers in the county competed in the event that lasted for several hours on Saturday and drew an estimated 1500 spectators.

All size tractors from lawn and garden tractors weighing 750 pounds to 15,000 pound stock farm tractors were on hand to complete in the various weight divisions. Along with the standard or stock tractors, there was a division of "hot-rod" tractors, usually built with a V-8 automobile engine and restricted in physical appearance only by the builder's imagination.

A 300-yard long track with yardage indicators spaced every 25 years was used as a proving ground for the machines and drivers and the Westminster Fire Company and an ambulance were on hand for safety measures and to wet down the track to keep dust at a minimum.

The Carroll Record, August 16, 1973.

State House: Color me yellow? No way

State House: Color me yellow? No way

As the painters working on stripping and repainting the State House dome found, much of the original dome was not white, but a color the original plan called "straw." But Sam Cook, in charge of the State House complex of buildings for the Department of General Services, shot down a stray rumor that the iconic dome would be restored to what Cook called its "wheat-ish looking color."

Nonprofits face funding worries as federal grants drop

With federal stimulus money coming to an end and the state budget strained, nonprofit organizations are searching for sources of future revenue. A state-sponsored conference scheduled for next month and geared specifically to that topic is already almost sold out.

In 1877, the year before the first Maryland State Fair event that we now know as occurring in Timonium, we would have only had to walk to Fair Avenue on the east side of Westminster to attend the Maryland State Fair.
That was the year that the Maryland State Fair was in Westminster on East Main Street according to Warner’s history of Carroll County.
“The Western Maryland Railroad provided a round trip ticket from Baltimore for $1.35, including admission to the fair. Omnibuses carried passengers from the Westminster depot to the fair grounds for a fee of 10 cents one way.”
