River Valley Ranch Carroll County - Child dies after being struck by falling tree during severe storm

River Valley Ranch Carroll County - Child dies after being struck by falling tree during severe storm

“Child dies after being struck by falling tree during severe storm”

According to a release by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office:
Millers, Carroll County, Maryland; July 8, 2014 ------ Just before 7 pm on Tuesday evening, July 8, 2014, approximately 114 children ages 7 to 12 years old were attending a session at a pavilion on the hill as part of the  River Valley Ranch summer camp when a strong storm came through the area.
Upon seeing the impending storm, the camp staff began  to move the children to an enclosed building also located on the hill. While moving to the hall, the storm arrived, knocking a tree over, which struck several of the children.
Seven children were transported to area hospitals. Tragically, one of the seven died as a result of the injuries. The other six children are not believed to have life threatening injuries at the time of this press release. An additional two children were treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene.
Parents of children attending the Arrowhead Woods and Fort Roller camps are being notified to pick up their children from the camp. The Frontier Town camp was not damaged by the storm, and the teenagers attending that camp may remain on campus if they choose.
Carroll County Sheriff's Office detectives responded to the scene and are in the process of conducting the investigation into this incident.

Two Charged After Landing at Base of Prettyboy Dam

Two Charged After Landing at Base of Prettyboy Dam

July 1, 2014 (BALTIMORE, MD) — The Baltimore Environmental Police, a division of the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, today charged two men with one count each of criminal trespass in connection with an incident Sunday, June 29, in which the men, who were kayaking at the Prettyboy Dam in Parkton, sustained injuries.

The men, Paul K. Hare (DOB 7/29/1992) and Stephen D. Sparks (DOB 1/28/1993), both of Northern Baltimore County, were found near the dam at 7:35 p.m. by Baltimore Environmental Police Officer Heidi Greenleaf and the Maryland Line Volunteer Fire and EMS. They were responding to a call for assistance that came in 10 minutes earlier.

Mr. Hare was found with a large head laceration and transported to York General Hospital in Pennsylvania. He was treated and released at 1:30 a.m. on June 30, 2014.

Mr. Sparks was found at the base of the dam with a severe head injury, possible broken bones, and possible internal injuries. A technical rescue was put into place with the help of the Baltimore Environmental Police, the Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company and EMS, Hereford Volunteer Fire Company, and Baltimore County EMS.

He was put in a stokes basket and carried up the cliffside and stairs at Prettyboy Dam to the awaiting Maryland State Police Aviation Unit and transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

An investigation determined that both men were in a No Trespass zone and had been boating without permits. Alcohol is believed to have been involved.

The rescue operation was completed in approximately two and half hours.

The charge is a misdemeanor that carries a possible sentence of up to 1,000 fine and 1 year in jail. The case is in the jurisdiction of the Towson District Court.

Off Track Art Reception for photographer Bob Boner will take place July 18, 2014

Off Track Art Reception for photographer Bob Boner will take place July 18, 2014

An exhibition featuring photographer Bob Boner will begin July 1, 2014 and run through August 31, 2014 at Off Track Art in Westminster.

A reception will take place on July 18th, 2014, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Off Track Art partner Nolly Gelsinger recently wrote, “ff Track Art is pleased to welcome July-August* guest artist, photographer Bob Boner.  Bob’s lens captures nuances of the natural world:  small and large mammals, birds, plants, and landscapes.

“Bob is essentially self-taught, though he admits to pestering more experienced photographers with “countless questions.”  He taught both traditional and digital photography at WMC/McDaniel College in addition to his regular classes for the mathematics department.

“Since his retirement in 2007, Bob has been able to travel to find a wider range of subjects and at home, his growing grandchildren are favorite models.”

In a recent e-mail Mr. Boner wrote, “I became interested in photography in 1968 when I lost my wife's camera in a canoe accident. Fortunately, I didn't lose her.

“I am essentially self-taught in the sense that I have taken no formal photography classes, but pestered more accomplished photographers with countless questions.

“A chemist, an artist, and I taught the first photography class at Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College in 1972. After that, I taught it by myself, whenever I could, in the January Term, regular semesters, and summer school, until the college hired a full-time photography teacher.

“With the advent of digital photography, I began teaching photography again. In 2007 I retired from my full-time position in the mathematics department after 37 years, but continued teaching photography in the January Term.

“My photographic interests are primarily nature/wildlife and grandchildren. My original interest in wildlife was in bird photography. But since retiring, I have been able to get out west in late fall to photograph other species of wildlife.”
