FW: Senator David Brinkley's Monthly e-Newsletter (June 2013)

I hope you're going to have a great summer, and for the Fathers out there,

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Senator
David R. Brinkley

Here are a few items I hope you find of interest. As always, feel free to contact me or my office with any concerns.

Rain Tax:

On May 31, I appeared on Maryland Public Television debating the "Rain Tax", which I opposed in the 2012 Session. It's a seven minute segment...click the link below:

Memorial Day:

I was honored to attend the Memorial Day service at the American Legion in Frederick on May 27. It was an incredible honor to talk to Mr. Vince Hall, who turns 100 in July, and landed on Omaha Beach. WHAG's Dawn White interviewed Mr. Hall where he shared his story. Click the link below:

Vince Hall's Story

American Legion Post 11's Memorial Day Service held a ceremony to memorialize the sacrafice of fallen veterans.  Click here for the full story published by The Frederick News-Post:

We can never thank enough, the individuals who died for this Country and our freedoms. And we shall never forget the families they left behind.

Baltimore City Jail:

On June 6th (ironically, the 69th anniversary of the D-Day invasion), the Legislative Policy Committee, which I serve on, had a hearing on the corruption investigation at the Baltimore City Jail. A Federal Investigation handed down indictments to 13 guards for corruption. I applaud the Secretary for bringing in Federal Investigators and being willing to air the Department's dirty laundry. The problems at the jail have existed for years, and now attention is being focused, and it's pathetic it took the realization that an inmate impregnated four guards and ran an illegal enterprise bringing in over $15,000 per month!  More work is being done preparing for legislation to address serious problems in the jail. Click on the links below for more information on this ongoing issue.

FUN THINGS TO DO

It's Carnival season!

Carnivals, carnivals, and more carnivals! Many of the benefits of living in Frederick and Caroll Counties are the numerous carnivals.  Most benefit the local Fire and Rescue Companies, and it's a great opportunity to meet neighbors and support the first responders.

I went to the Woodsboro Carnival Monday, June 3rd, for fried chicken and a funnel cake (yes, healthy eating went out the window that day!)

A list of upcoming Carnivals is listed below; support the one's you'll call for help in an emergency!

In honor of the bicentennial of Francis Scott Key's immortal poem memorializing the sight of seeing Fort McHenry surviving a night of British Naval bombardment. We all know the poem was adapted to the music of an old British drinking song, and became our national anthem. Visit Tourism Council of Frederick County's website for all the details.
Other Happenings:
On May 23rd, I attended the Brunswick Business Breakfast and learned of several upcoming events to support the economy in the southwest part of the County. For details on upcoming events click here:

June 13, 2013 Historical Society of Carroll County press release:

The Historical Society of Carroll County (HSCC) has hired Fred K. Teeter, Jr. as executive director, effective June 10, 2013.  Teeter replaces Timatha S. Pierce who retired May 31, 2013, after serving as chief executive officer for seven years.

Through his family and on his own, Fred enjoys strong local connections.  We’re fortunate to have him.”  Teeter’s selection follows an intensive, nationwide search conducted by HSCC officers and directors.

Teeter served previously as CEO of Carroll Child Care Centers, Inc., an historic non-profit child day care program based in Westminster, MD.  He is former president/CEO of the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce in Hagerstown, MD; executive director of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) of Delaware, Inc. in Newcastle, DE; assistant executive director of ABC of Georgia in Atlanta, GA; and assistant director of communications for ABC, Inc. in Washington, D.C.

Migrating to Windows 8 by Kevin E. Dayhoff June 12, 2013 www.TheTentacle.com

My latest experience with Microsoft has left me with the technological equivalent of post-traumatic stress disorder. In the last six-months I have migrated light years from the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to Windows 8. It was not easy.

I’m told the twitching and the nightmares will stop with the passage of time and copious amounts of coffee. When I finally pulled the plug on my old laptop for the last time, I had this awful feeling in the pit of my stomach as if I had just taken a loved-one off of life support.

That feeling was quickly replaced by the sheer terror of dealing with an improved computer system in which I could no longer easily perform so many of the functions I had executed effortlessly in the previous, now obsolete, system.

The Microsoft Windows operating systems have been a major force in the modern-era of technology and personal computing. The roots of the software system date back to 1981, although the first version, Windows 1.0 was not available for consumer use until late in 1985.

One of the most popular and widely used systems in history has been the Windows XP system, which was introduced in August 2001, and dominated the market until Windows 7 (released in 2009,) overtook it in August 2012. Windows 8 was released in October 2012.

MEMA urges Maryland residents to prepare for potential severe weather Wednesday and Thursday

MEMA urges Maryland residents to prepare for potential severe weather Wednesday and Thursday http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2013/06/mema-urges-maryland-residents-to.html

Labels: Public Safety Emerg Resp safety, Public Safety MEMA, Weather, Weather Carroll County, Weather Maryland

REISTERSTOWN, MD June 12, 2013– With forecasters predicting a high risk for severe weather over the next two days, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to be prepared for strong storms that might affect the area. Although much of Maryland has a chance of thundershowers today, the National Weather Service says the greatest risk for severe weather in the state will be on Thursday.

            Residents are reminded to:

·                 Make sure cell phones and other portable devices are fully charged and consider purchasing and charging spare batteries.

·                 Have a disaster supply kit with bottled water, non-perishable food (with a hand-operated can opener), a first aid kit, portable radio and flashlight with extra batteries, toiletries, special items needed for pets or infants, prescription medicine, a change of clothes and bedding. The kit will be helpful if you have to evacuate quickly or if you are without power.

·                 Keep some cash available in case ATM machines are not available.

·                 Have copies of important documents such as home and property insurance policies, driver’s licenses, health insurance cards, etc.
·                 Know where you would meet other members of your family if your home is not safe.

·                 Remember that in the immediate aftermath of a serious event, wireless communications systems may be overloaded. Text family members to let them know you are safe so voice calls for emergency agencies can go through.

Follow local weather forecasts in your area for the next two days to learn if there are any warnings in your specific area and take appropriate actions.
