8 Nato troops, 6 children killed in Afghan blasts - Emirates 24/7: "8 Nato troops, 6 children killed in Afghan blasts

By AFP

Published Friday, January 06, 2012

Eight Nato soldiers have been killed in a series of bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan, the military said Friday.

Three died on Thursday, another lost his life in a blast on Friday and four more were killed in second attack later the same day.

Nato's US-led International Security Assistance Force did not release the nationalities of the soldiers, in keeping with policy.

Details would be released by the soldiers' home countries, a spokesman said.

More than 560 foreign troops were killed last year in Afghanistan, where some 130,000 US-led troops are fighting an insurgency by hardline Taliban Islamists against the Western-backed government of President Hamid Karzai."

Margaret Gunther Fisher, of Westminster, November 14, 1919 - December 19, 2011

Margaret Gunther Fisher, of Westminster, died Monday, December 19, 2011, at the Dove House, Carroll Hospice Center. http://www.prittsfuneralhome.com/vcalendar/event_view.php?event_id=179

Born November 14, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Nereus W. Gunther and Marie C. Albright of Baltimore. She was the beloved wife of Charles Osborne Fisher for 69 years.

After attending Seton High School, Margaret left school to work and help support her family. With her beauty and poise, her first job was as a model for Hutzler Bros. department store in Baltimore. Her alluring voice soon won her a job at C&P Telephone Company where she was known as “the voice with a smile”. While working the swing shift, she continued her education and cultural development by spending many hours at the Enoch Pratt Library reading and listening to opera.

Romance bloomed at the 1939 Preakness Ball where she met Charles, who won her musical heart by playing a tune with spoons on water glasses. In 1942 they began their married life in New Jersey where Charles was stationed during World War II. Their first two, of eight children were born on the Fort Monmouth Army base. After the War, they returned to Westminster, eventually moving into Charles’ childhood house where she created a loving and beautiful home.

She became a member of the Westminster Woman’s Club and served twice as president of the Carroll Garden Club. A Certified Master Gardener, her garden and floral arrangements were legendary. Margaret was instrumental in securing the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s performances at Westminster High School for the Carroll County Symphony Society. At St. John Catholic Church in Westminster, she organized the chicken dinner fund raisers and was the chairman of the first St. John’s Christmas Bazaar which is now a long standing community tradition.

Margaret loved art and travel. She was a volunteer at the Baltimore Museum of Art and a member of the Walters Art Gallery. She visited the major art museums of European, Mediterranean, Mexican, Canadian and American cities.

She was a woman of many talents. Her Irish roots gave her the gift of gab with a graciousness and serenity that put everyone she met at ease. She could cook on a camp stove for 8 people, call her children to dinner with a whistle that could be heard for blocks, backpack across the mountains of Greece, dress for the opera or symphony looking like a movie star and entertain Governors in her home. She was proud of being sprayed with “mace” while attending the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago and proud to have been part of the 1963 Civil
Rights March on Washington. But her greatest pride was her children, her family and her husband.

Surviving are her husband, Charles O. Fisher, children, Charles O. Fisher, Jr. and wife Bridget Fisher, Kathleen T. Palaia and husband Arthur Palaia, Paul N. Fisher, M. Eileen Churchill and husband R. Paul Churchill, James I. Fisher and wife Lily Shin, John D. Fisher and wife Kellie W. Lee, Miriam L. Fisher and husband Lawrence J. Yumkas, and Anne’s husband Thomas C. Kelly, Jr., sixteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and brother Denis H. Gunther and wife.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Anne C. Kelly, her brother, Nereus W. Gunther, II and sister, Frances Browning.

The family will receive friends on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 at the Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe Street, Westminster, MD 21157 with Monsignor Arthur Valenzano as celebrant. Interment will be private in St. John Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. John Catholic School, 43 Monroe Street, Westminster, MD 21157 and Carroll Hospital Center Foundation, Inc., 200 Memorial Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.

Convenience store clerk assaulted with baseball bat during robbery in Sykesville

Darrell L. Webb Jr., 21, wanted for armed robbery, first degree assault, and theft.

A citizen interrupted the robbery and tackled the suspect as he fled the store but was unable to hold him until police arrived

Maryland state troopers and Sykesville police responded to the High’s Convenience Store at 7400 Village Road, Sykesville this morning for a report of an assault with a baseball bat.

The Maryland State Police have reported that when the officers arrived upon the scene, at approximately 6:45 a.m., “officers located the lone store clerk suffering from multiple injuries from an apparent strike to the head and body with a baseball bat.”

A warrant has subsequently been issued for Darrell L. Webb Jr., 21, of the 1800 block of Amanda Lane, Sykesville, Md., charging him armed robbery, first-degree assault, and theft with additional charges that are pending. “Troopers believe Webb acted alone and at this time is the only suspect in the incident,” according to state police.

The 21-year-old clerk was transported to the Carroll Hospital Center by the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Company with non-life threatening injuries.

State police report that the preliminary investigation indicates that “Webb entered the convenience store and threatened the store clerk verbally. He then used the bat to strike the clerk several times before fleeing the store.”

Police say that in addition to assaulting the clerk with a baseball bat, Webb also stole an undetermined amount of Maryland Lottery scratch off tickets…

“An alert citizen observed Webb enter the store with the bat and interrupted the assault,” say police. “The citizen tackled Webb as he fled from the store but, but was unable to detain him until police arrived.”

Webb is reported to have fled the scene “in a dark blue 2006 Chrysler Sebring with Maryland tags 8AK5106,” according to state police.

It has also been reported that this is not the first time Webb has threatened the clerk. In the course of the investigation “Investigators also learned that Webb is believed to have threatened the same store clerk with a baseball bat several days prior to this incident. That incident is being investigated by officers with the Sykesville Police Department.”

Troopers from the Westminster Barrack, along with members of the Sykesville Police Department, are searching for Webb. Anyone with information about the robbery or Webb’s whereabouts is asked to contact state police at 410-386-3000.

Save Farm Families Fundraiser planned for the Hudson Family on February 18, 2012

Save Farm Families Fundraiser planned for the Hudson Family on February 18, 2012

When: Saturday, February 18, 2012
Time: 3:00pm until 8:00pm

At Queen Anne's County 4-H Park; Centreville, MD

The Hudson Family of Berlin, Maryland is being sued by the New York based Waterkeeper Alliance. They operate a poultry and beef farm in Worcester County, Maryland. 100% of the funds raised will go to help the Hudson family pay their legal bills. This event is sponsored by the Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot County Farm Bureaus.

Our goal is simple: Stand up and protect struggling farm families from bankruptcy triggered by extremist groups and their lawsuits.

For more than two centuries, family farms have been critical to the Maryland economy and the state’s way of life. Many of us are the sons and daughters of men and women who farmed, fished and raised their families in every corner of the Free State.

The Maryland Family Farmers Legal Defense Fund, Inc. was created to help Alan and Kristin Hudson, who run a family farm located near Maryland’s Eastern Shore, pay their mounting legal bills and to call attention to the threat that radical groups like the Waterkeeper Alliance pose to every family farm in America. Unless we stop them in the courtroom, Maryland’s largest industry, responsible for 14 percent of the state’s workforce, could disappear forever.

Harford County Has AAA Bond Ratings Reaffirmed

Harford County Has AAA Bond Ratings Reaffirmed

January 3, 2012

According to a Harford County press release dated January 3, 2012, Harford County has had its AAA bond ratings reaffirmed

The press release said:

Conservative fiscal management, low debt burden cited as strengths

(Bel Air, MD) - - County Executive David R. Craig is pleased to announce that Harford County has had its AAA bond ratings reaffirmed by rating agencies Moody’s Investors Service and Fitch Ratings.

The two agencies upgraded the County in 2010, and the confirmation of the AAA ratings are the result of a review of the County’s fiscal management practices and economic outlook, as well as meetings with the County Executive and members of his administration.

Standard & Poor’s, which had previously assigned the County with an AA+ rating also reaffirmed their rating. The three rating agencies employ financial and business experts who seek to advise investors with regard to the safety of investing in a particular organization.

By assigning these ratings, the experts are identifying Harford County as a safe place to invest and to do business.

According to Fitch Ratings, Harford County’s rating outlook is stable, and the County’s financial operations are “characterized by a conservative approach to budget development, timely revenue and spending adjustments, and steady compliance with a fiscal stabilization policy equal to 5% of spending.”

Furthermore, Fitch adds, “Harford County continues to adhere to good debt management guidelines, which have allowed overall debt levels to remain low.”

Fitch also notes the county’s “historically low unemployment,” which they attribute to the quality of the local labor force, the County’s location, and the high concentration of federal government employees and contractors.  The continued expansion of APG, the report states, “should prove beneficial over the intermediate- to long-term, particularly with respect to attracting higher-wage employment opportunities.”

Similarly, Moody’s Investors Service identifies Harford’s “conservative management that maintains comprehensive fiscal policies” as a strength, while noting that the county’s employment linkage with the federal government is a challenge going forward

Commenting on the reports from the rating agencies, County Executive Craig remarked, “As I stated a year and a half ago when we were first upgraded, the efforts that my administration and the County Council have taken to diversify our economy, to reduce the tax burden of our citizens, and to invest in key infrastructure projects have positioned Harford County well for the future.”

“The reaffirmation of our  AAA bond rating confirms that  our conservative fiscal approach is working, and that despite facing significant headwinds in our national economy, Harford County is not only weathering the storm but thriving.” County Executive Craig added, “If only the federal government could get its house in order as we have done, Harford County and our citizens could look forward to an even brighter and more stable future.”

Focus on Fire Safety: Fire Escape Plans - Westminster, MD Patch

Make a point to create a fire escape plan for your home in 2012. By Kym Byrnes

"The Insurance Journal reports that nearly one third of all residential fires occur in the winter months. Winter house fires can start from too many holiday lights plugged into an outlet, portable heaters or fireplaces left on all night.

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has released information to help homeowners be safe in the event of a fire.
