CNN: Fernandez sails to victory in Argentinian presidential vote

Fernandez sails to victory in Argentinian presidential vote

October 24, 2011|By the CNN Wire Staff

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner became Latin America's first female president to win a second term when she sailed to victory in Argentina's elections.

With 98% of votes counted Monday, Fernandez was the decisive winner, obtaining nearly 54% of votes cast and far surpassing her closest competitor.

Hermes Binner, a Socialist governor from Santa Fe, came in second place with almost 17% of the votes.

Economic issues played a large role in Sunday's vote, political analyst Carlos Germano told CNN en Español.

South America's second-largest economy has bounced back from the brink and shaped a most unlikely recovery, driven by high commodities demand from China and a series of unorthodox economic policies that worked to help shelter Argentina from much of the economic malaise that is gripping the rest of the planet right now.

Under Fernandez's leadership, Argentina's economy has enjoyed sustained growth of about 8% annually. The president points to this expansion and a low debt load as examples of how Argentina is well-positioned to weather the uncertainty in the current global markets.

Fernandez's win was a sign that Argentinians want to see economic growth continue, Germano said.

"It was an overwhelming vote to preserve what we have in light of the imminence of the problems that we are seeing in the United States and Europe," he said.

Fernandez, a center-left member of the Peronist party, went into Sunday's vote as the undisputed front-runner after handily winning the primary vote… http://articles.cnn.com/2011-10-24/americas/world_americas_argentina-elections_1_cristina-fernandez-female-president-peronist-party?_s=PM:AMERICAS

Haaretz: Shostakovich's muse By Noam Ben Zeev

Shostakovich's muse

In March 1953, a sigh of collective relief swept over the streets of the Soviet Union: Joseph Stalin was dead. Among the millions of people who felt that their lives were returned to them was the man who had been considered the Russian national composer until he fell out of favor with the regime, eight years earlier, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

His Ninth Symphony, which he wrote to celebrate the USSR's victory in World War II, was radiant, full of life, almost "light," but it infuriated Stalin. The Party committees declared it to go against the will of the Soviet people, and denunciated the composer with the label that was a death sentence for any artist: "formalistic."

Shostakovich was boycotted. The eight years during which the commissions dried up and the performances of his work ceased, and in which he was dismissed from his position as professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory, brought him to the brink of poverty and to thoughts of suicide. It seems that he was not immune to the curse: Beethoven had been the last to write nine symphonies, and in the 130 years since his death, no major composer had succeeded in completing a 10th one.

In December of 1953, however, the curse was lifted. The conservatory's huge Bolshoi Auditorium, sparkling with thousands of lights and overflowing with colorful bouquets, was packed with an audience that had come to celebrate the composer's return to his hometown, with his new symphony, his 10th. The enormous, excited crowd applauded the Leningrad Philharmonic, under the baton of one of the period's great conductors, Evgeny Mravinsky. And Shostakovich, bursting with pride, took his seat of honor…

Aaron Davis: O’Malley urges lawmakers to consider 15-cent gas-tax hike

O’Malley urges lawmakers to consider 15-cent gas-tax hike

As promised, Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) used the start of the legislature’s special session on redistricting Monday to begin talking about jobs, and offered more clarity about suggestions he’s made since August that he would support higher taxes to boost spending on public infrastructure.

O’Malley said the General Assembly must begin considering a 15-cent increase to Maryland’s gas tax to fund road construction, public transit and other transportation projects. The governor also suggested he would seek an unspecified expansion to the state’s capital budget to fund school construction and other infrastructure needs when the General Assembly convenes in January.

John Fritze and Annie Linskey, The Baltimore Sun: Congressional redistricting set for final debate

Congressional redistricting set for final debate

After clearing Senate, map heads to the House

Maryland's House of Delegates is poised to give final approval Wednesday to Gov. Martin O'Malley's plan to redraw the state's eight congressional districts, but not before lawmakers engage in a final showdown over the controversial map.
Despite objections over how the new map treats minority voters in the Washington suburbs, the measure has sailed through this week's special session of the General Assembly without significant opposition or delay. Republican House leaders said they plan to offer a robust debate Wednesday, even if it appears Democrats have enough support to advance the plan.
"I would strongly disagree with the fact that if you think you don't have the votes, let's just move on and not have the debate," said Del. Anthony O'Donnell, the House Republican leader from Southern Maryland. "Part of the creation of the legislative record is the debate."
[...]
The proposed map would pack Democratic voters into the Western Maryland district long held by Republican Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett, creating an opportunity for Democrats to control seven of eight members of the state's congressional delegation. Some critics say mapmakers accomplished the goal by splitting blacks, Hispanics and Asians into multiple districts, diluting their voting power.
[...]
Republicans in the House expect to offer three proposals to change the map, O'Donnell said. A handful of Democrats plan to offer an alternative proposal supported by Rep. Donna F. Edwards, a Prince George's Democrat who has become one of the most vocal critics of O'Malley's proposal.
