By Kevin Dayhoff

Phil Grout’s exhibition at Birdie's Cafe Gallery in Westminster ended on January 2, 2011 after a well-received two-month showing.

Grout, an award-winning photojournalist, fine art photographer appeared for the opening of a retrospective show of his work on November 5, 2010 at Birdie's Café 233 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157 - http://www.birdiescoffee.com/

The show titled “44/40,” spanned over four decades of Grout’s work, from Vietnam to Africa, Plains Georgia, to Carroll County; and includes almost 70 pieces of work.  (See also: http://www.scribd.com/doc/41131999/Phil-Grout-award-winning-photojournalist-to-appear-at-Birdie%E2%80%99s-Cafe-Gallery-in-Westminster)

An article about Grout’s critically acclaimed show appeared in the Carroll Eagle on November 7, 2010.  The article may be found at: http://www.explorecarroll.com/community/4918/photojournalist-phil-grout-shows-decades-work-birdies-caf/

At that time, Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, the owner of Birdie’s and an artist herself, added, “Phil Grout is one of the greatest photojournalists of his generation.  We are truly blessed as a community that he has chosen our stories to document.  Phil has an amazing ability to find the extraordinary in everyday life - and this show, a retrospective of forty-four years of his work, will leave you awestruck.”

On November 6th, 2010, Grout published the following notes and anecdotes about his show, the art exhibited and his four-decade journey as an artist: “Phil Grout 44/40 in Light.” http://www.scribd.com/doc/46301381/Phil-Grout-art-exhibition-ends-at-Birdie-s-Cafe-Gallery-in-Westminster-Maryland

Explore Carroll: Dayhoff: Greeting the new year with comfort, joy ... and a lack of debt

"January, bleak and dreary,
First arrival of the year,
Month of all months most contrary,
Sweet and bitter January."
On Jan. 2, 1994, Joe Getty of Manchester (now a state senator-elect) greeted readers with that poetic tribute to January in a column he wrote for the Historical Society of Carroll County about New Year's celebrations in Carroll County in the late 1800s...  http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5039/greeting-new-year-with-comfort-joy-lack-debt/

January 1, 1971: The latest in the series of efforts to discredit "The Star Spangled Banner"

January 1, 1971: The latest in the series of efforts to discredit "The Star Spangled Banner"

Community Reporter, January 1, 1971.

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM - The latest in the series of efforts to discredit "The Star Spangled Banner" as this country's National Anthem has come from the Artistic Administrator of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D. C. George London, a 50-year-old Canadian vocalist who has made a name for himself in the opera world by singing grand opera parts in the Hollywood Bowl, in San Francisco and in Vienna, Austria, and who also sang the title role in "Boris Gudunov," in Moscow, in the U.S. S. R., has given it as his opinion that "The Star Spangled Banner" is "difficult for most people to sing."

Mr. London may be an authority on opera music, but apparently he possesses weak objections to patriotic airs.

"The Star Spangled Banner" is sung by thousands of Americans in patriotic gatherings all over the country, and apparently not too many who have any talent for singing at all have difficulty in handling this number.

Authorities in the type of music which stirs and stimulates the patriotic feelings, such as John Philip Sousa, the "March King," have given it as their opinions that it is an excellent composition, well-adapted not only for singling, but also for marching music.

We have no criticism of Mr. London's ability in his field, but his field is not patriotic musical composition. Irving Berlin, who wrote "God Bless America," would be a more acceptable critic in this area.

Millions have grown to love Francis Scott Key's stirring version, and perhaps it is not so much the fact that the music is objectionable as it is that the words were inspired during a British abortive attack on Fort McHenry.

After all Mr. London is a Canadian native, and may still have some feeling for the land of his birth, which has pretty close ties with the British Crown.

Community Reporter, January 1, 1971.

James Robert Langdon, Sr., age 91, of Westminster

James Robert Langdon, Sr., age 91, of Westminster

By Kevin Dayhoff

Posted 12/17/2010 – 12/29/2010

James Robert Langdon, Sr., age 91, of Westminster, was laid to rest at Creek Cemetery in Union Bridge on Thursday, December 16, 2010.

Langdon, a co-founder of the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens and the owner of a family business, Direct-To-You-Gas, on Green Street in Westminster, died on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Westminster

Friends, family, neighbors and community leaders crowded into the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home on Willis St. in Westminster last Wednesday to pay their respects to the popular businessman and community leader who never tired of giving back to the community.

His son, Jim Langdon, noted that his Dad would have been unhappy to have received so much attention.  He didn’t do things to draw attention to himself, said Langdon.

When discussing his work with the Association for Retarded Citizens, another family member added, when Langdon and his late wife of 52 years, Ina Mae (Rakes) Langdon, who died August 22, 2005, decided to do something, they worked hard to make it happen.

Langdon was October 26, 1919, in New Windsor.  He was the son of the late Joseph and Lula (Etzler) Langdon.

He graduated in 1936 from New Windsor High School and Western Maryland College – now McDaniel College with the class of 1940.

During World War II, he served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Force in the south Pacific.

After the war, he first worked as a stockbroker before he started several family businesses in Westminster; including Polar Peak Ice Cream, Bio-Chem Company, and Langdon Oil Company.

However, he is best known for starting Direct-To-You-Gas in 1955.  The gas station to this day is one of the very few in the area where attendants still pump the gas for you.

Up until 1964, an added feature of the station was the ice cream stand the family ran next to the station.  Today, the gas station remains a family affair.  Jim Langdon joined the family business in 1966.

It was also in 1955 that Langdon and his wife teamed-up with a number of other parents and community leaders to found the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens, now known as The Arc of Carroll County, to offer scholastic, recreational, and employment opportunities to their special children.

According to the ARC’s website, it “was established in 1955 by a small group of parents of children with developmental disabilities.  At that time, children were excluded from public education and there were no structured social, recreational, or educational activities outside of the home.

“Those parents met to see how they could collectively foster the growth and development of their children.  From their meeting came this organization, The Arc of Carroll County, Inc.”

Surviving Langdon are sons and daughters-in-law, James R. and Margaret “Maggie” Langdon, Edward A. and Linda Langdon all of Westminster, daughter and son-in-law, Susan L. and Douglas Quade of Keuka Park, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Michael Langdon, Jenny Parsley, Megan Pratt and James D. Quade; two great-grandsons and many nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Twyla Rowe conducted Langdon’s funeral service on Thursday.  The family has asked that memorial contributions in Langdon’s memory may be made to Heifer Project International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR, 72202 or to Westminster Church of the Brethren, 1 Park Place, Westminster, MD 21157.
