... on Nov. 2, along with your vote, please bring along a can of beans, or soup -- or even marinated asparagus spears -- to take along with you to the polls.

This election, Carroll County is going to continue a unique tradition started with the November 2008 election.

It's a humanitarian effort of neighbor helping neighbor that, to the best of my knowledge, is a one-of-a-kind initiative in the nation.

One of the things that make Carroll County special is that no matter how many changes occur over the years, we always maintain our priorities by looking out for one another.

This year, Martin Radinsky, Frank Baylor, Kelly Buie, Bob Mitchell, David and Laura O'Callaghan have again organized the Election Day food drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday. Volunteers will beat polling places throughout the county to collect the nonperishable canned goods.

Last week, Radinsky said that in November 2008, Carroll County voters filled seven 150-cubic foot containers with donated food. In an interview with Radinsky back in 2008, he said he wanted "to build (the food collection effort) into a Carroll County habit for elections in the future."

Mental Health and Disability Awareness Fair at Carroll Community College

Twenty-four mental health and disability agencies and activities were represented at the Carroll Community College Mental Health and Disability Awareness Fair.  The Fair was held for students, faculty, and staff on Oct. 20, 2010 in the college’s Babylon Hall.  Community members also attended the event.

The Carroll County Community Mediation Center (CCCMC) celebrated Conflict Resolution Day at Carroll Community College  on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. The CCCMC operates under the auspices of Carroll Community College. Exhibitors and area experts staffed displays and answered questions from students, faculty, and staff about peaceful conflict resolution.

Corn Maze to Open in Westminster

Get lost this fall at the 2010 Carroll County Agriculture Center corn maze.

Authorities have identified the crop circles found outside of Westminster as the work of Carroll County Ag Center volunteers and not the work of space aliens.

Beginning Friday, September 10, 2010, the Ag Center will feature over 2 miles of trails creatively carved out of acres of seven-foot tall corn just outside of Westminster.

It has been six years since a maze was artfully carved into the crop fields at the Ag Center.  In 2004, over 3,300 folks visited.

The theme of this year’s maze is a celebration of Carroll County’s agricultural heritage.  A cornucopia of grapes, an apple, a banana, pumpkin, and squash have carefully been carved into the field for hours of family fun.

Come test your navigational skills.  Get off the couch, turn off the TV, get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air and support a worthy cause, the Carroll County Agriculture Center, home of the nationally known Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair.

Public hours are Friday and Saturday nights from 5 PM to 9 PM and Sunday afternoons from 2 PM to 6 PM.  The maze will be open weekends until October 31, 2010 and will feature a haunted maze on October 29^th and 30^th, 2010.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 3 to 12.  Group prices and times are available, call 410 848-6704.

This event is to benefit the CARROLL COUNTY AGRICULTURE CENTER, Inc.  The Carroll County Agriculture Center is the site of the 50,000 square foot Danele Shipley Memorial Arena, as well as numerous other meeting facilities, function and banquet rooms and outdoor facilities.  Located in central Carroll County, the Agriculture Center also helps meet the needs of our neighbors in Baltimore, Washington D.C., and southern Pennsylvania.  The facilities are designed to host a wide variety of events from livestock shows to entertainment events, trade shows and exhibits.  The Agriculture Center is also the permanent home of the Carroll County 4H & FFA Fair.

Carroll Community College Recognizes Students at Adult Education Ceremony

Carroll Community College Recognizes Students at Adult Education Ceremony

Westminster, Md., - Twenty students in the Adult Education program operated by Carroll Community College (Carroll) will participate in a recognition ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Theater in the Scott Center. This is the third annual ceremony to recognize adults who have completed General Education (GED), National External Diploma Programs (NEDP), and earned their high school diplomas.

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo and Board of Trustees Chair Barbara Biller will also offer congratulatory remarks. Family and friends of students have been invited to attend the ceremony.

Two student speakers will share their experiences in the program and discuss the importance of receiving their high school diplomas. Peggy Blizzard of Westminster received her diploma in December, 2009 upon passing the GED tests.  Blizzard is the mother of five children and is currently enrolled as a full-time student Carroll Community College.  Denise Miskimon of Manchester completed the National External Diploma Program in September 2010.  Since receiving her diploma, she has begun working at Carroll Hospital Center. 

“I am pleased to recognize the students who have completed the adult education program successfully,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “I expect great things from them in the future and offer the moral support of the college as they move forward.”

 "It is so special to have the opportunity to publicly recognize the achievements of our graduates at this event," said Becki Maurio, director of the Adult Education Program.  “This celebration represents the culmination of the hard work and sacrifice of graduates in their commitment to making a better future for themselves and their families.”

The Art Galleries at Carroll Community College

Between September and May, the college hosts art exhibitions in a variety of media and styles by students and regional and nationally celebrated visual artists. Exhibitions are held in three locations at the Washington Road campus:

The college also hosts opening receptions for selected exhibitions, which are open to the public and college community.

Curator, Maggie Ball

The Exhibit: Conceived by curator and Indofile Maggie Ball, this exhibit of memory and fantasy will delight the senses and evoke feelings of longing for times and places of transcendent beauty.  It is a translation of impressions inspired by many journeys to India - a homage to the spirit of a country possessed of extraordinary beauty, esoteric philosophy and compelling contradiction. From backroads and bazaars, art, decorative craft, textiles and jewelry merge to create a magical and sacred ambience sure to inspire. Look for related events throughout the semester.

The Jayamangala Dance Company performs Indian classical temple style of dance called "Bharatanatyam" which uses strong footwork, elegant hand gestures, facial emotions and gorgeous traditional costumes to tell stories of Hindu mythology and modern interpretations in an eclectic collection of solo and group works.

This semester's India theme, created by curator Maggie Ball, continues in the Great Hall with a mix of image and word in which photographs and writing come together to create a sense of past and present, history and philosophy and art and culture. In keeping with the college's mission to promote broader understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, this exhibit is part of a multi-event series of India related programs. Henna Mehndi: The Body Beautiful

Sunday, Oct. 17 - Friday, Dec. 3

A further extension of this semester's India theme explores the ancient and revered ceremonial art-form of Henna painting. In India, decorative, temporary body painting Mehndi, is used to celebrate special rites of passage and ceremonial occasions such as weddings. Images of gorgeous Henna applications and accompanying commentary provide insight into the symbolic and sacred nature of the custom. At a specified time during the run of the exhibit a Henna artist will be at the college embellishing your body while demonstrating the technique!

A rested Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding gave a report on the recent “Cops on Rooftops” fundraising event at the Westminster mayor and common council meeting last Monday.

He looked none the worse for wear after spending over 30 hours perched on the roof of the Dunkin' Donuts, on Route 140 in Westminster last Saturday and Sunday.

After the obligatory humor about cops and doughnuts, Spaulding confessed that he was proud that he only ate two doughnuts in the 30 hours he spend with his colleague, Lt. Andrew Winner, commander of the Maryland State Police Westminster barrack, raising money for Special Olympics Athletes.

“Well, we endured the heat, the cold, the wind, and the rain, but the fundraiser was a great success.  We raised well in excess of our $5,000 goal for Special Olympics last weekend…” 

The total came to $8,332.00, said Spaulding with some pride and a bit of subdued amazement that they surpassed their goal by so much.

At 9:30 last Saturday night the two intrepid police officers had already raised over $3,500.00 when Explore Carroll visited to check their progress (and their welfare.)

“It’s going well,” said Spaulding over the sounds of the radio playing and the steady stream of well-wishers from below.  Up on the rooftop, Winner and Spaulding had nested quite well, with lawn chairs, food, and an awning overhead set-up to provide all the comforts of home – on a highway store rooftop, that is.

How Spaulding only ate two doughnuts is amazing since their rooftop digs were constantly bombarded with the aromas of doughnuts being made in the store below. 

“Oh, geeze, what’s that?  It’s apple.  I think they are now making something with apples” (in the store below,) lamented Spaulding at one point.  “Oh man, this is torture,” he laughed as he traded words of encouragement with Winner not to eat too many doughnuts throughout the evening.

Of course, both Winner and Spaulding are athletes themselves and do not look like they eat too many doughnuts.  “Look at this guy,” Spaulding said of Winner last Saturday night. 

“Does he look like he eats a lot of doughnuts?”

"Don't answer that," Winner said.

“The citizens of Carroll County have been quite generous,” said Spaulding.  “Frankly, that does not surprise me,” he elaborated as he added how he has always been amazed as to how well Carroll countians support social causes with generosity.

Winner quickly added in agreement, “I have been truly amazed at the generosity of Carroll County.  A lot of people made a special effort to come and make a donation.”

Maryland State Police spokesperson Greg Shipley was also there last Saturday evening to cheer Winner and Spaulding on.

“It’s commendable…,” said Shipley.  When asked for further comment, Shipley explained that all the attention needed to be on the two police officers and the special needs athletes they support.

“Hey, I’m just here to congratulate them on what looks to be a successful event.  It’s nice that two officers give-up their weekend for such a good cause,” said a smiling Shipley as he traded humor with Winner and Spaulding from the parking lot below.

"It's a great cause," Spaulding said of Special Olympics.  “Law enforcement has a long history of supporting Special Olympics.”

So does Spaulding.  He is a central regional coordinator for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, and has participated in that event since 1986.

His interest started 23 years ago when he was an officer in the Howard County Police Department and was asked to participate in Maryland's first Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Since then, he has volunteered to raise money for and awareness about Special Olympics.  He attends Special Olympics competitions as far away as Japan to serve as a security guard, awards presenter or volunteer.

As for the doughnut shop rooftop stunt, the idea came from law enforcement officers in Illinois who took to the rooftops of 94 Dunkin' Donuts locations in 2009, and raised more than $182,000.

In Maryland last year, one location in Laurel participated in the promotion and raised $7,000.  This year, Westminster joined three other participating locations in College Park, Ocean City, and Glen Burnie.

Last Monday night at the Westminster council meeting, Spaulding explained that a retired state trooper made a special trip to donate $1,000.00 on Sunday and the owner of the Dunkin’ Donuts also donated $1,000.00 to the cause.

“And folks are still asking if they can still donate,” said Spaulding.  “And the answer is yes, just be in touch with me at the (Westminster Police) station.”
