Textile artist Sue Helmken to open exhibit at Off Track Art in Westminster Friday evening March 7, 2014

Textile artist Sue Helmken to open exhibit at Off Track Art in Westminster Fri March 7, 2014 - Kevin Dayhoff http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/textile-artist-sue-helmken-to-open-exhibit-at-off-track-art-in-westminster-friday-evening-march-7-2014
When: Friday, March 7, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Off Track Art gallery at 11 Liberty Street Side Entrance in historic downtown Westminster:

Sue Helmken is a textile artist with over 30 years’ experience in weaving, dyeing and teaching.

According to information provided by the gallery and the artists, Ms. Helmken earned a B.A. in Design at East Carolina University and has continued learning new techniques by experimenting and by studying with fiber artists such as Madelyn Van der Hoogt, Alice Schlein, Barbara Cooper, Donna Sullivan, Jozef Bajus, and Holly Brackmann.  She also studied at the Penland School of Crafts and the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Experimenting with new techniques and non-traditional materials is her favorite challenge. Mixing wire and yarn, she weaves narrow bands and shapes them into 3-dimensional forms.

Some are patterned after natural forms while others mimic fashion accessories.  She also weaves clothing and accessories.

Ms. Helmken uses a variety of yarns and fibers to develop cloth with textures and patterns not found in commercially woven fabric.

Ecclesiastical pieces such as stoles, banners, and altar cloths are another facet of her work.

Ms. Helmken has been a juried member of Gallery 209 in Savannah, GA, Fiberworks Gallery and The Potomac Fibersrts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory of Alexandria, VA, Studio Fiberarts at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA.

Her work has been accepted in juried
shows throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, most recently at AASU Gallery, The Blackrock Arts Center, Sweetwater Center for the Arts, The Art League of Alexandria, VA, and The Workhouse Center for the Arts.

She taught weaving and dyework at Armstrong Atlantic State University; she conducts workshops and classes for fiber guilds and offers private lessons as well.

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

November 15, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff

Yesterday I took a look at running at the Westminster Cemetery on North Church Street in Westminster.

In addition to the trails I discussed here on October 22, 2013, http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/fall-is-great-for-running-trails-in-carroll-co?yPos=0; I’ve been wondering how many other walking-running trail opportunities in the Carroll County area I have overlooked.

I mean, I walked the blacktop trails at the cemetery marveling at how many times I had visited the historic cemetery and really never considered it as a walking - running trail.

I saw many other walkers and runners. I did not measure any courses. That will be my next step. Although it is in the middle of Westminster, it was amusingly - and amazingly quiet, bucolic and serene. I grabbed a cup of coffee at Birdie's, http://www.birdiescoffee.com/, and really enjoyed a moment or two to myself - in the middle of town. LOL

Meanwhile, I hope to see many of you at the Terry Burk Wakefield Valley Community Trail memorial dedication service and 5K run on Saturday morning, November 16, 2013. Join the artists of Off Track Art to welcome an exhibit by award-winning nationally acclaimed artists John and Deborah Sosnowsky, creators of jewelry, art and music. “John and Debby have been making, designing and handcrafting Jewelry, Art & Music full time since 1980,” according to the website sozra.com. ++++++++++++++++++++++

The opening for the Sosnowsky exhibition will be on November 15, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Off Track Art, 11 Liberty Street, Side Entrance Westminster, MD.

Meet artists John and Debby, who have been designing and handcrafting jewelry, art and music since 1980. Jewelry includes signature niobium and carnelian pieces, and we will enjoy their music as well. Work on view and for sale until Dec. 22, 2013. Parking, refreshments.

“John and Debby have been making, designing and handcrafting Jewelry, Art & Music full time since 1980,” according to the website sozra.com.

“They met at Towson State University in the Art department. John's concentration was in photography and Debby's was in Fabric Design and Weaving.

“Shortly after they were married, they decided to combine their talents to create a jewelry business. John's music and art is a never-ending creative endeavor. His 5th CD Multiverse Vortex will be coming out in the fall of 2013. The music is an extension of the Multiverse Vortex 2D Art series.”

“John Sosnowsky is a graduate of Towson State University and a native Marylander current residing in Frederick County. With his wife Debby he has been teaching, demonstrating and creating jewelry, Art and Music full time for over 30 years under the name Sozra Studio.

“He has been the onsite juror of the Pittsburgh Three River Arts Festival, served on the Maryland Renaissance Arts and Craft Board and the Artist Market Chair of the Frederick Festival of the Arts. John is a contemporary Artist. His work is sold through various juried shows, galleries and on the web at www.sozra.com

John Sosnowsky elaborated upon his concept of “Geometric Surrealism,” in his artist statement:

“Beauty and harmony in nature are defined by their simplicity and apparently effortless existence. Art, regardless of tradition, time, historical relevance or medium has attempted to recreate and mimic nature since the first intentional lines were drawn in the soil beneath primitive feet.

“As my experiences through travel, study, and technology would have it, the medium and creative direction my art has taken spans continents, religions, time and a multitude of resources. In an attempt to recreate the beauty and harmony I have emanating in my being, my experiences and imagination have converged with simple geometry, high technology and ancient symbolism to bring an element of timelessness and universality to the piece before you.

“These pieces are meant to evoke comfort and curiosity, calm through chaos, and the untraditional through convention. Enjoy the juxtaposition of each piece as simplicity draws you into complexity.

“All human construct evolves from basic laws of existence. In the case of visual arts, we remember basic geometry. Nothing starts without a point. Two points may connect a rigid line. Yet a series of points can give semblance to a wave or abstraction of sorts. Regardless of time, space, culture or belief these are the rules we abide by in our visual creations of ‘art.’ With this collection I hope to bring you on a positive, visual journey that spans all that is known while remaining simple.

“With a Bachelor’s Degree in Art from Towson University, I have been working for over 30 years, with my wife Debby, creating and selling art at juried shows and galleries.”

Check out their website for photos of their beautiful work: http://www.sozra.com

November in the Artists' Gallery in Frederick MD including an exhibition by Phyllis Jacobs

November in the Artists' Gallery in Frederick MD including an exhibition by Phyllis Jacobs

November at The Artists' Gallery
The Artists' Gallery Big Hearts Small Works Exhibit, Dec 2011
In November, The Artists’ Gallery presents the work of Phyllis Jacobs and the members of the Artists Gallery.

Risk-taking in art is usually associated with young artists.  Phyllis Jacobs doubts the truth of this. She asks, “How might an artist approaching the latter years of life remain productive?”  There seem to be two choices: continue refining what has been the signature work of nearly 50 years, or take the risk of a challenge in totally new terrains. Acrylic canvases of the past, some large enough cover a wall, give way now to small paperworks mounted on cradled birch panels. The sense of touch remains. Paintings made on an iPad respond to fingers on the screen. Pencil drawings enhanced with gauze, coffee filters, bold erasures, and spilled liquids may be selected as much for how they feel in the hand as they do to the eye.
