Smallwood artist Jerry DeWitt draws creative inspiration from his farm past

'Carroll County Farm Heritage' exhibit opens March 18 at community college

When Jerry DeWitt paints a barn, there's a bit of the gentle clanging of cowbells mixing in with the watercolors.

That sound echoes back to his grandfather's Depression-era farm at the end of a lane in Bedford County, Pa.

He was just 2 years old when his father left home for good and the youngster was uprooted from Lansing, Mich., to live with his grandparents.

And in between trips to the pasture to the hand-dug well for another bucket of water, or out to the shed for an arm load of firewood, the sights and sounds and smells of farm life wrapped themselves around Jerry's memory, eventually finding their way to paint and paper more than 30 years later.

Many of those works will be displayed in the show, "Carroll County Farm Heritage: Paintings by Jerry DeWitt," opening Sunday, March 18, at Carroll Community College, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster, with a reception from 2 to 4 p. m… http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-03-17/explore/ph-ce-dewitt-and-wisdom-0318-20120317_1_oil-painting-smallwood-farm-life

… Information and photographs of Mr. DeWitt and his work, see Phil Grout’s article, “Smallwood artist Jerry DeWitt draws creative inspiration from his farm past,” in the Baltimore Sun on March 17, 2012, about Mr. DeWitt’s work and his well-received and highly successful show at Carroll Community College. Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster … so should we be worried?

Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster ... so should we be worried?

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

Unbelievable. According to an old history of the Baltimore Colts in my files, "Unitas was cut by… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0122-20120119,0,3298374.story

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler - Marylanders for Joe Getty January 18, 2012

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and I attended the funeral yesterday for Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler. In our official capacities, we offered condolences from all Maryland citizens to the family for their loss.

Today, at the end of the Senate legislative session, I moved that the Senate adjourn in memory of Airman 1st Class Seidler as a tribute to this Maryland Fallen Hero.

Seidler was 24-years-old and lived in Westminster where he graduated from Westminster High School in 2006.

When he joined the Air Force, he was accepted into the elite EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. He was well-aware of the dangers he faced - the EOD personnel comprise only 1% of the Air Force but suffer 25% of the casualties.

On January 5, 2012, Seidler was part of a military convey of 27 vehicles engaged in hostile combat operations in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Earlier that day, his unit had defused two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) so that the convoy could continue its maneuvers. Tragically, his truck was hit by a third IED that killed Seidler and two other airmen.

The article by Kevin Dayhoff of the Carroll Eagle does an excellent job of capturing the outpouring of emotion and the honor and dignity given to this local hero during the funeral at Sol Levinson's & Bros. in Reisterstown. (click here)

Please keep the family of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler in your prayers.
